Excellent: Why They Hate Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson Peale

A Review of The Long Affair: Thomas Jefferson and the French Revolution, 1785-1800, by Conor Cruise O’Brien, Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1996, 367 pages.

What a marathon of Jefferson-bashing we have had in the last few years. This book by the “global statesman” O’Brien follows several other critical biographies, all of which have been highlighted in the fashionable reviews. More than usually offensive to Jefferson admirers was a collection (The View from Monticello) by University of Virginia professors trashing their founder (not surprising since they are all carpetbaggers anyway); a slashing attack in National Review; and, worst of all, Ken Burns’s latest television “documentary.”

None of this literature tells us anything about Jefferson. There is no scholarship—that is, research and discovery—involved. We have here, rather, a case study in intellectual sociology: that is, an exhibit by fashionable intellectuals determining what is and is not acceptable to their version of the American regime. What they tell us is that Jefferson is out now.

Friends, you must have either Jefferson or Hamilton. All the fundamental conflicts in our history were adumbrated during the first decade of the General Government in the contest symbolized by these two men. Hamilton lost in the short run, but triumphed in the long run. He would find much that is agreeable in the present American regime—a plutocratic kritarchy which we persist, by long habit of self-deception, in calling a democracy. But Thomas Jefferson would not be at all happy with what has happened to this country; he might even suggest that the time had come for a little revolution.

The host of petty intellectuals and pundits, elitists, and would-be elitists—tame scribblers of the American Empire—sense this, and so Jefferson must be dealt with appropriately. The Establishment is frightened by the rumblings they hear from the Great Beast (that is, we the American people). They are shocked to realize that Jefferson honestly did believe in the people; that he believed the soundest basis for government to be popular consent and a severely limited government.

The Virginia Flaggers: Developments in Danville

We received word yesterday that the Virginia Supreme Court ruled that it will not hear the appeal of a Danville judge's decision that upheld City Council's removal of the Third National Confederate flag from a monument on the grounds of the Sutherlin Mansion.

A petition for re-appeal will be filed and we remain hopeful that one judge will see the validity of the case and the petition will be granted.

This is a minor setback, to be sure, but this fight is far from over. Justice will prevail and the flag will return. In the meantime, we are having all kinds of fun beautifying the landscape in Danville with Battle Flags!

Thanks to a generous gift from one of our supporters, we recently purchased SIX new custom-made Army of Northern Virginia Battle Flags!

We are proud to announce that the Danville flag crew has just raised the first 20x20 of these new flags at the Danville 58 bypass site, after completing some upgrades at the site, which included added security and the installation of lighting.

Orlando, Paris, Yorkshire, and Donald Trump’s Unanswerable Questions About Immigration

 A French-born Muslim stabbed a French police chief to death outside his home, then tortured the man's wife in front of their toddler son--all while livestreaming his rampage on Facebook.

The very first thing I heard about the Orlando shooter, on the CBS news over my car radio, was that he was an American citizen. They just couldn’t wait to tell us that.

Whether it was precisely CBS who were eager to tell us, or Orlando law enforcement, with CBS just passing on what they got, I don’t know, and it doesn’t much matter. It shows the mindset of authorities at all levels in our society. The thought behind it is the one uttered out loud by General George Casey after the Fort Hood shooting: “As horrific as this tragedy was, if our diversity becomes a casualty, I think that’s worse.” [Fort hood: diversity rules, NY Post, October 29, 2012]

That is actually how people in authority think: not merely editors of liberal newspapers or TV stations, but managers and leaders in the military and law enforcement, corporate bosses, bureaucrats and politicians, college administrators, all the way down to schoolteachers and librarians

My Children, Father, Thy forgiveness need;
Alas! their hearts have only place for tears!
Forgive them, Father, ev’ry wrongful deed,
And every sin of those four bloody years;
And give them strength to bear their boundless loss,
And from their hearts take every thought of hate;
And while they climb their Calvary with their Cross,
Oh! help them, Father, to endure its weight.
— from The Prayer of the South
Following the War Between the States (1861-65), Jefferson Davis, President of the defeated Confederate States of America, was imprisoned with a view to his being tried for treason on account of his leadership role in the South’s effort to make of itself an independent nation. Two years later, however, he was released and went into exile in Montreal (in Catholic Quebec) and then wandered in Europe before returning to these shores to spend his final days in his home state of Mississippi. His release came after a finding by the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, Salmon P. Chase, that there was nothing in the U.S. Constitution that prohibited the secession of states. If secession was not illegal, neither Davis nor any other Confederate leaders could be guilty of treason.

The treatment endured in prison by Davis — a gentleman, a hero of the Mexican War, one-time son-in-law of a U.S. President (Zachary Taylor), a U.S. Secretary of War and U.S. Senator from Mississippi prior to becoming President of the C.S.A. — ill bespoke those who imprisoned him. It was clearly calculated to break him as a man. For instance, guards were posted around the clock inside his cell in order to deprive him of all privacy, including even at the times every day when nature required that he take care of the most private needs of all.

Immigration boss who barred feds from terror suspect up for award, but agency won't say why

A U.S. immigration official blamed in a federal report for barring law enforcement agents from a suspect in the San Bernardino terror attack has been nominated for a prestigious agency award – but her bosses in Washington refuse to say what she did to earn consideration.

Irene Martin heads the San Bernardino U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office, where last December, she allegedly blocked five armed Department of Homeland Security agents from the man authorities say supplied the firepower in the deadly attack a day earlier. Although an Inspector General's report found she acted improperly, and then lied to investigators, FoxNews.com has learned she has been nominated for the Secretary’s Award for Valor.

“To give Irene Martin an award for valor is insulting to all the prior awardees – the agents and officers who truly displayed valor and risked their lives to save someone else,” said Jessica Vaughan, director of Policy Studies for the Center for Immigration Studies, a Washington-based research institute.

22% of Bernie Sanders Supporters Will Vote for Trump

In the two weeks since Hillary Clinton wrapped up the Democratic presidential primary, runner-up Bernie Sanders has promised to work hard to defeat Donald Trump - but he's given no sign he'll soon embrace Clinton, his party's presumptive nominee.

Neither have many of Sanders's supporters. A June 14th Bloomberg Politics national poll of likely voters in November's election found that barely half of those who favored Sanders - 55 percent - plan to vote for Clinton. Instead, 22 percent say they'll vote for Trump, while 18 percent favor Libertarian Gary Johnson.

"I'm a registered Democrat, but I cannot bring myself to vote for another establishment politician like Hillary," says Laura Armes, a 43-year-old homemaker from Beeville, Texas, who participated in the Bloomberg poll and plans to vote for Trump. "I don't agree with a lot of what Trump says. But he won't owe anybody. What you see is what you get."

Scott Baio on Obama: "I can’t tell, Lester, whether he’s dumb, he’s a Muslim, or he’s a Muslim sympathizer. And I don’t think he’s dumb.”

Former Hollywood heartthrob Scott Baio (of Happy Days, Joanie Loves Chachi and Charles in Charge) has a bone to pick with Barack Obama and the Democrat Party, and he’s not shy about making it known.
That little tweet led to some serious Twitter backlash from liberals across the Internet – but Baio didn’t back down. In fact, he made his way to Fox Business to explain why he’s supporting Donald Trump and why he’s tired of President Obama and his liberal policies.
