Turkey Surrounds, Blocks Access To NATO's Incirlik Airbase Amid Speculation Of Second Coup

While it is common knowledge by now that the failed and/or staged Turkish coup two weekends ago was nothing more than an excuse for Erdogan to concentrate even more power and eradicate all political and independent opposition, a story that has gotten less attention is the sudden, and acute deterioration in US-Turkish relations. This culminated two days ago when the Commander of US Central Command (CENTCOM) General Joseph Votel was forced to deny on the record having anything to do with the attempted coup in Turkey following pointed allegations from the very top in the local government that the US orchestrated last Friday's "coup", according to a statement released by the US military on Friday.

As Stars and Stripes reported late last week, the recent failed coup and jailing of military leaders in Turkey could impact U.S. operations there against the Islamic State group, Gen. Joseph Votel said Thursday at a security conference in Colorado. Votel said the coup attempt in Turkey two weeks ago left him “concerned” about how U.S. operations and personnel at Incirlik Air Base will be affected.

I know Bill Clinton has a heart condition, and it did start a bit late, but you would think they could give him and Tim Kaine a doppio espresso before the speech started.

Leon Wolf asks which candidate's speech will sound better a month from now. Neither. With the exception of a few amazing speeches (Reagan, Churchill, etc.), I rarely spend my free time listening to speeches. Other than looking to lift sound bites for attack media, I doubt few people will. And as Leon noted, it was poorly executed. The answer is no one will care about these speeches a month from now, we will be into the debate cycle then and that is what will matter.

During the week, Clinton’s campaign and state Democratic coordinated campaigns will hold more than 500 registration or “commit to vote” events across the nation.

For example, voter registration events will be held at the Islamic Center of Akron’s Eid celebration in Ohio; a bilingual day camp in Hazelton, Pennsylvania; Detroit’s Eastern Market; and a campaign office opening in Madison, Wisconsin.

To reach the goal of 3 million new voters, the campaign said it had created a one-stop-shopping online voter registration tool in English and Spanish that can be widely shared online.

Clinton’s voter registration and mobilization project will aim to build upon the turnout machine built by Obama’s two winning campaigns.

And it also underscores how important it will be for Clinton to activate Obama’s coalition of black, Latino, female and young voters to turn out in large numbers amid a negative election environment against Trump.

It is well known that European nations began colonizing many Asian and African countries in 16^th century. For example, the Portuguese established colonies in India’s Goa and Southeast Asia at the beginning of the 16th century, the Spaniards started their colonization of the Philippines in the 1560s, while the British East India Company started colonizing India in 1757. But few of know that even those European nations were under the threat of piracy and depredations by Muslim pirates from North Africa.

These Barbary pirates used to intercept commercial vessels in the sea, loot the merchandise as booty and capture white Europeans sailors as slaves for selling in the slave-markets of the Middle East and other Muslim countries. In addition to mid-sea piracy, they used to launch raids in the coastal villages of Europe and capture both male and female Europeans and forced slavery on them.

Hate-crime defendant beat man who called him 'cracker' for Southern symbol

In a hate crimes complaint, the U.S. Department of Justice has identified a criminal defendant’s tattoo of the Confederate flag as “indicative of white supremacy,” according to court records.

Federal prosecutors today announced the filing of criminal charges against a pair of Toldeo, Ohio residents in connection with the beating of Adrian Williams, 46, in mid-May. A U.S. District Court complaint alleges that Charles Butler, 33, and Robert Paschalis, 25, assaulted Williams “because he was black.”

Afghan cleric arrested for marrying six-year-old girl

An elderly Afghan cleric has been arrested after he married a six-year-old girl, officials said Friday (July 29), in the latest case highlighting the scourge of child marriages in the war-battered country.

Mohammad Karim, said to be aged around 60, was held in central Ghor province as he claimed her parents gave him the girl as a "religious offering", officials said.

But they cited the family of the girl, believed to be in shock, as saying that she was abducted from western Herat province, bordering Iran.

"This girl does not speak, but repeats only one thing: 'I am afraid of this man'," said Masoom Anwari, head of the womens affairs department in Ghor.
