The South has a depth of meaning not available to other regions of the country. It is older than the United States, and for four years it was a nation fighting for its independence. It has known tragedy, greatness, and humility. Having changed, it has yet retained a substantial character. To be Southern does not require being born in the South, nor to be of a specific race or ethnic group, nor is it an ideology. M.E. Bradford defined Southern identity as “a vital long lasting bond among those who have contributed to it.” And Flannery O’Connor said “It lies very deep. In its entirety, it is known only to God, but of those who look for it, none gets so close as the artist.”

Join us for a thoughtful discussion of Southern Identity and the posture it should assume in an increasingly shallow and fractured “American” national identity.

Bernard Baruch: Son of the South

 

On the morning of July 5, 1880, Colonel E.B.C. Cash and Colonel William M. Shannon faced each other with pistols near Du Bose’s bridge in Darlington County, S,C. At a word of command, Shannon fired quickly, splashing the muddy ground at the feet of his adversary. Colonel Cash, an experienced duelist with a sinister reputation, coolly took aim and fired. Seconds later, Colonel Shannon, believed to be the last man shot in a “high-toned” pistol duel anywhere in the United States, lay dead.

The killing of Colonel Shannon sent shock waves across the state and spurred the South Carolina legislature to enact strict new laws prohibiting dueling and disqualifying from public office anyone who had taken part in one. The incident also had a profound effect on one of the men in attendance that fateful morning. Dr. Simon Baruch, a close friend of Shannon, had reluctantly agreed to witness the affair. Hoping to avert bloodshed, Dr. Baruch had secretly alerted the local sheriff. But the intervention of the law came too late. Haunted by what he believed was a needless and tragic death, Simon Baruch decided to move his family and his very successful medical practice to New York City.

The Senate votes to kill broadband privacy rules

The Senate voted Thursday to approve a measure that could make it easier for broadband providers to sell private information about you to marketers.

In a 50-48 vote, lawmakers approved a joint resolution from Sen. Jeff Flake, a Republican from Arizona, that uses the Congressional Review Act to prevent privacy rules passed by the Federal Communications Commission last year from taking effect.

The resolution also would prevent the FCC from enacting similar consumer protections in the future. The measure must now be voted on in the House of Representatives.

The disease killing white Americans goes way deeper than opioids

In rich countries, death rates are supposed to decline. But in the past decade and a half, middle-age white Americans have actually been dying faster. Princeton economists Anne Case and Angus Deaton first pointed out this disturbing trend in a 2015 study that highlighted three "diseases of despair": drugs, drinking and suicide.

On Thursday, the pair released a deeper analysis that clears up one of the biggest misconceptions about their earlier research.

The problem of dying whites can't only be blamed on rising rates of drug overdoses, suicides and chronic alcoholism, they say. More and more, middle-aged white Americans are dying for all kinds of reasons — and the underlying issue may have less to do with opioids and more to do with how society has left behind the working class.

Homeowner ordered to take down ‘racist’ Blue Lives Matter flag after years without incident

A Florida woman who has flown a pro-cop American flag outside her home for years was ordered to remove it from her property after it was deemed “racist.”

Jeff Gaddie of St. Johns County told a local Fox affiliate this week that his daughter has displayed a Blue Lives Matter flag on her front porch for years, but a recent complaint prompted her homeowners association to order its removal. She was told to put in an official request for permission to fly the allegedly “racist” flag and then was denied.

“She called [the HOA] to ask why,” Mr. Gaddiesaid Tuesday. “They told her they had received a complaint that it was considered racist, offensive and anti-Black Lives Matter.”

Trump could order spy agencies to hand over intelligence intercepts that name him — but he hasn’t

President Trump has not used his authority to compel U.S. spy agencies to turn over transcripts of all intercepted communication that mention him or his associates in dealings with Russia, the White House confirmed Friday.

The information could answer questions about alleged collusion with Russia or whether the Obama administration spied on Mr. Trump and his team, as Mr. Trump has charged.

The president’s handling of the vast resources of the U.S. intelligence agencies have been questioned as his administration struggles to overcome allegations of Mr. Trump’s ties to Russian meddling in the election.

When asked by a reporter about the president’s ability to request the transcripts, White House press secretary Sean Spicer flatly said, “No.”

High School Rapists Entered U.S. as Unaccompanied Alien Children, Lived in Sanctuary County

The teenage illegal immigrants charged with raping a 14-year-old girl in the bathroom of a Maryland public high school last week entered the United States under an Obama program that’s accommodated tens of thousands of Central American youths who crossed the Mexican border. The administration coined them Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC) and portrayed them as innocent, desperate kids fleeing violence and famine in their homeland. Most are from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala and the influx has overwhelmed border agents, government health agencies and military bases that serve as shelters not to mention public schools nationwide.

This week two of the UACs protected by Obama’s outlaw amnesty measures were charged with the rape of a ninth-grader at Rockville High School in Montgomery County, a Maryland jurisdiction that offers illegal aliens sanctuary. The illegal immigrants, 17-year-old Jose Montano and 18-year-old Henry Sanchez, were both charged with first-degree rape and two counts of first-degree sexual offense. Both illegal aliens were in the ninth grade like their victim, according local news reports. Montano came to the U.S. from El Salvador and Sanchez, who reportedly had been ordered deported, from Guatemala. Both are being held without bail. Several local media outlets printed a letter sent to parents by the school district describing the rape as a “serious incident” that “is being addressed.

A new report has found that millennials don't consider themselves adults until they reach the age of 30.

Yes, you read that correctly.

According to The Wrap, research compiled by David Poltrack, CBS' chief research officer and their ratings expert, as well as Nielsen Catalina Solutions, found that millennials consider themselves adults at age 30 because that's when they typically are completely responsible for themselves – they no longer reside with their parents and pay entirely for their own bills.
