Did anyone ever figure out how many deserters never returned to CSA after this? According to Elizabeth Pryor's book about Lee, 2/3 of the Confederate soldiers did not reform. Did they reform later?
There seems to be evidence of massive Southern desertions that have have been to embarrassing to admit. Yet Jeff Davis himself said 3/4 of his soldiers deserted, by September of 1864. He went on to say if just half of them came back, the South could not lose. That was Jeff Davis, not some guy 100 years later.
