Tiger Tank Hand Crank Inertia Engine Start Up

Via Ol' Remus

The inertia starter " Schwungmasse " works by rotating a heavy mass at speed, once it reaches 60rpm a lever is pulled below the hand cranking arm, this pushes the drive pinion onto the fly wheel, making the engine rotate and start. These men starting the Tiger are very experienced tank mechanics, who were in the Army but now volunteer to keep Tiger 131 working.

  1. This is why I dig you, Brock. You find the coolest stuff.

What? No Delco-Remy starter? Or maybe a Bosch?

That thing is a beast. Imagine it heading right towards your fighting hole in the Ardennes...or going up against it in a pos Sherman or Churchill!

I built a Tamiya model of the Tiger 1 when I was a kid...big ol' 1/35 scale. Painted and detailed it extensively. Took weeks to create. Looked pretty much like this one.

Then, a few years later, I blew it up with fire crackers!

    I was a problem child.

:) Wish you had a video. I was a perfect child. For example one day after many years of my mother spanking me with her huge, long hairbrush, it broke. She said, "I'm not going to spank you anymore, Brock." I asked why and she stated "Because it doesn't do any good!!:)
