Autumn NC PATCON pictures from Hans Mentha

Real "field radio" - a beautiful day in a cotton field east of Princeville NC

Hans gave the Short wave radio communications demonstration and lecture, both excellence and hopefully he will return in the Spring.

  1. Great pictures. Love the portable station setup, got some ideas. If Hans gets a spare few minutes a short description of the equipment and antennas would really be appreciated.
I noted the HF rig, antenna tuner, straight key, bug, open wire line from the tuner to the antenna and maybe a VHF rig in the box on the left. I have been a ham for a long time but just this year got back on the air after being away from it for 20 years. Boy have things changed.
Will listen for Hans on the air.

    2. Hello Terry - good eyes

The box on the left holds an Alinco 605 (144/440), SWR meter and AC power supply. On the table sits a Larson dual band whip on a sturdy automotive mag-mount. The PVC pipe standing against the camera tripod holds a homebrew 144/440 ground plane.

The box on the right holds a TenTec Jupiter (80m -> 10m), a B&W low pass filter, an MFJ 949 tuner for the 450 ohm ladder line to the non-resonant doublet, a SignaLink sound card for WinLink radio email, a speaker, and an AC power supply.

The gray "mast" holding the doublet is an "improv" design made from a split 12' 2x4 and an 8' 1x2 top section. The three pieces are rounded to slip into sections of 1.5" Type1 Sched40 PVC pipe. They're raised with a forked stick and guyed with clothes line to stakes.

The bug is an Electric Specialty "kit" bug sold mail order in the late 1940's and early 1950's. The straight key is a Signal Electric R64 'spark' era antique.

Since you're a 'ham', you can sign-in and look up W2UF on QRZ.COM for a bit of bio and photos.

      Thanks for your interest.
