Confederate Memorial Day, Stone Mountain 09 April, 2011
"In spite of impending rain, hundreds of Southern patriots gathered at the Stone Mountain carving to honor their Confederate ancestors.
Stone Mountain, the largest single block of granite in the world, also has the honor of holding the largest Confederate memorial in the world.
The enormous carving on its north face, the largest bas-relief in the world, depicts three figures of the Confederate States of America: Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson.
The entire carved surface measures 3 acres, about the size of three football fields. The carving of the three men towers 400 feet above the ground, measures 90 by 190 feet , and is recessed 42 feet into the mountain. The deepest point of the carving is at Lee's elbow, which is 12 feet to the mountain's surface
Over fifty members of the SCV Mechanized Cavalry came from four States to pay homage to their Confederate ancestors. Represented were North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia."
