Blandford Church’s Memorial to North Carolinians
A unique memorial to North Carolina’s soldiers at the Blandford Church in Petersburg, Virginia,
erected in 1735. The church has the world’s largest collection of stained glass windows crafted
by Louis Comfort Tiffany. St. Bartholomew is pictured to represent the heroic sacrifices of
North Carolina’s sacrifices for Virginia, his knife notes his fate as he was flayed alive for
bringing Christianity to Armenia.
Above his head is the Great Seal of the State; the inscription below St. Bartholomew states:
“In memory of North Carolina’s Soldiers of whom 40,275 proved their devotion to duty by their death. God bless North Carolina. R.E. Lee”
