Buffalo soldiers untold history

"The story of the buffalo soldiers is untold American history,"

The only "untold" history I'm aware of is the fact that they, in conjunction with their Yankee counterparts, massacred our American Indians of all ages and sexes, using expertise perfected during the WBTS.

My Suggestion For Equal Time For The S&S

  1. It is a bit disturbing to me as an American Indian, and a former resident of Alabama, that so much hoopla is being made in regards to the Buffalo Solider parade, and especially glorifying their service during the Indian wars. I am not sure where the reference saying the name Buffalo Soldier was given in respect by the American Indian.
As a descendant of a race of people who were victims of the Buffalo Soldiers, I find it impossible to show respect to the glorification of a military unit who turned cannons upon skin covered lodges filled with helpless old men, women and children alike. No one need take my word for it, read some history.

  2. When folks are ignorant of history, a double standard ensues. I find these stories interesting.

The ignorant are quick to denigrate and characterize those who parade in Confederate dress, but will welcome those in Buffalo soldier dress, even though the Buffalo soldier had one simple duty - round up Indians and put them on reservations. If they resist - kill 'em. Makes sense they wore a damn bluebelly uniform.

I find the photos in the article ridiculous. One does not mix different era attachments. For example, it appears these men are wearing medals from their era of service in the armed forces ON these period Buffalo soldier uniforms - along with a bunch of other crap. That should not be. They should have better respect for both the medals earned and the period uniform as those medals did not exist during the era of that uniform. There is a proper time and place for display of those medals on their person.

The photos remind me of some of the politically-connected, geegaw-wearing SCV flagpole climbers who look like Russian czars with all their bullshit "medals."

I have a Confederate States Marine uniform (1861) but I do not place the medals I earned during my 22 years of US Marine Corps service on that period uniform, or any other device for that matter.

  3. Brock I would like to thank you for posting my comments as I placed them in the Birmingham press.
I could have really laid it on the line and educated the readers had I had the space and the cold hardheartedness of using a forum that is easily accessed by women and children. ie: I could have really went off about the documented rape by the buffalo soldiers against Indian women of all ages (including children) and the mutilation of the female genitilia, which in turn were both worn by the Buffalo Soldiers, and also sold and shipped back east as sick , and perverted trophy's. Of course someone would have replied about the women mutilating the 7th Cav after the battle of Little Big Horn, yet they wouldn't be aware that was done both out of mourning for lost husbands, brothers, etc, and out of a spiritual belief that in doing so, the blue bellies would never return in spirit.
There is a great difference in the practice of such acts, when it involves spirituality vs out right slaughter of innocents, rape , pillage and plunder. This is only my opinion, and I am sure there are those that would disagree. However, my perspective as being from one of the many bands of Sioux cousins who actually had relations that endured encounters with Buffalo Soldiers should at least carry more weight than the opinions of someone who saw the parade in Birmingham and simply found it colorful and an economic boost.
Hell, if they want that........they should celebrate more Confederate and Celtic events, that go hand in hand with Bama history. Not something that celebrates horrors on the western plains. That's just my 2 beads worth.
