It WAS designed to be popped using a round - or the punch that's included in the buttstock cleaning kit.
Now...
I'm no "purist" -- I own the world's most tacticool Mini-14 and have - over the years - bought about every SKS doo-dad you've ever seen. I even have a Chi-com "SKS-D" which takes AK Mags.
I stress this so you don't think I'm one of "those guys..." It's YOUR rifle, and you should do whatever makes you happy.
BUT...
If you're seriously considering an SKS for battle-rifle use, FORGET ALL THE DOO-DADS! Spend your time practicing so that you get proficient with stripper-clips.
I've proven this to more than one guy at the range: You take your "tapco" or other mags and I'll take my as-issued* SKS with stripper-clips, and we'll shoot 20, 40, 60 -- whatever, just so we both need a reload -- and I'll put more rounds in the kill-zone than you in any amount of time you specify.
I'll also NEVER have a jam, nor a FTF.
It really is a fast system, and works like a DREAM! It also forces you to be a more consistent shooter as you're less inclined to "spray and pray"...

* One exception is the Chi-com 20-round fixed mag. I do very much like them, but only because they too are FOOLPROOF in my rifle.
I love my SKS. Took it out with a friend a few days ago along with my M1A. I spent more time on the SKS. I was popping head sized rocks at 300 yards consistently and recoil is so small it is easy to get back on target quickly. I had detachable 30 round mags for it, but as Dedicated said... well, it was to much of a pain in the design. Went back to stripper clips.
And fool proof? I have never had a problem with it.
I've never had one, but found one for a friend who was looking. Seems like the Commies made some pretty foolproof weapons. I have a Bulgarian AK and a M-44.
Need to be careful not to cause bullet setback if you plan on firing this round...
ReplyDeleteA screwdriver or other implement works better...
Seems easy enough...
ReplyDeleteI posted another one using a punch.
ReplyDeleteI suspect that it was designed to be disassembled with a round out in the field, eh?

ReplyDeleteAn excellent design then.
