Personally, I believe TPTB knew (in VERY rough form) that it was coming - if not exactly when - but decided to "let it happen" because they needed the excuse to pursue the desired wars in the ME. I think they were surprised at the level of devastation though...
That said, what's "bat shit crazy" is the idea of "controlled demolition" in either building. Watch just one TV show on what it takes to bring down smaller structures then tell me how they managed all that in a building that ran 24x7x365.
Further, the leaks about "able danger" and etc. prove the impossibility of keeping something so large - involving so many people - a secret. Supposedly they were unable to keep a "command exercise" quiet, but NOBODY has spilled the beans on this humongous "inside job"?!

Like I said - there was plenty that's hinky, but the "troofers" shoot themselves in the foot by tolerating the nutcases. THIS is why we'll never really know the truth.
