‘Survivalist’ murder suspect found dead in bunker after 22-hour standoff with police

Via Tom Stedham

After a 22-hour standoff, police blew the top off a rugged mountain bunker near Seattle on Saturday, only to find their suspect — a man believed to be a murder suspect who holed up there — dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside.

Authorities had not positively identified the body as 41-year-old Peter Keller, who hadn’t been seen since his wife and daughter were found shot to death last weekend, King County sheriff’s Sgt. Katie Larson said.
A bomb squad cleared the bunker, built into a ridge in the Cascade Mountains, to make sure there were no booby-traps before detectives entered. Officers shouted warnings before blowing the roof, Larson said. Tear gas pumped into the bunker didn’t work on Friday. With clear weather and a fresh police commando team in place Saturday morning, it was time to act more aggressively, she said.

It wasn’t clear if any officers had heard the gunshot from inside the bunker, she said.

  1. This kind of thing burns my ass.

    I don't know all the particulars to the lead up to the event, it's a distrust of media thing.

    If you are going to go this type of route, why eat a bullet?

    If you have taken all these steps;
    build reinforced bunker
    provision it
    E&E to it
    Then why eat your own bullet.

    If I am forced into this type situation of being holed up with no way out. Some thugs are going to have to pay a bill to get me.

    But again some folks are weak and can't handle up.

  3. I saw this, too, in the local paper. I also saw the implications in the word choice 'bunker', 'survivalist mentality', 'gas masks'. It's convenient that the only named suspect ate a bullet. Did he actually kill his family? Granted, many 'family destruction' murder-suicides like this one are committed by the father, but that's no guarantee of anything. I ask because it doesn't quite add up for a man who spent so much time and money getting ready to then end himself this way. On the other hand, if he was preparing to survive for and with his family only to destroy them himself, that would break most anyone's will to go on fighting.
