A 55-year-old Athens man was in critical condition Sunday after he was shot by the owner of a Westside check-cashing business who fired in self-defense when the man pulled a gun, Athens-Clarke police said.

Donald Collins was under police guard Sunday afternoon in the intensive care unit of Athens Regional Medical Center, where was treated for gunshot wounds to his face and head, police said.

Collins, who is charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of firearm in the commission of a crime, is a possible suspect in an armed robbery of a convenience store in Five Points two weeks ago.

Collins was shot Saturday morning by the 75-year-old owner of Classic Cash, 2141 W. Broad St., police said.

Raymond Penn spent 23 years in the U.S. Army and never had to fend off a bullet, but that changed early Saturday for the 75-year-old business owner.

“It’s not a pleasant thing — either being shot at or having to defend myself in that manner,” Penn said Monday morning at Classic Cash, the business he owns on West Broad Street.
