The annual Robert E. Lee Birthday Observance will be held at the Old State Capitol House Chambers, downtown Raleigh this coming Saturday, 19 January at 2PM. The birthdate of Lee has been observed as a legal holiday in North Carolina since the early 1890s, and it is one of three days when the flag of the Confederate States of America flies over the Old State Capitol building.
This
year’s keynote speaker is Bernhard Thuersam, Chairman of the North
Carolina War Between the States Sesquicentennial Commission, and
Director of the Cape Fear Historical Institute.
The
Observance is sponsored by the North Carolina Daughters of the
Confederacy, and the Military Order of the Stars and Bars. The Old State
Capitol building, built in 1840, is located at 1 East Edenton Street,
downtown Raleigh.
