  1. Here is a two part article from a survival blog that features that radio. It was written and submitted by a friend of mine and is intended as a guide to low cost HAM radio for the novice/beginner.

  2. I have the Wouxun dual band radio which I think is very similar. I highly recommend getting the programming cable. It makes things so much easier and you can save several different sets of frequencies on your computer. The software for both the Wouxun and Baofeng is available at www.wouxun.us.

BTW, Wouxun is pronounced Woah Shun. No clue how to pronounce Baofeng. :-)

  3. I bought the Beofeng UV5RA a couple of months ago with the cable and better Nagoya antenna. Not being real familiar with HAM, I am trying to understand the frequencies, nomenclature and the radio. I found a good site for license testing at www.hamwhisperer.com and bought his technicians textbook. NCrenegade has some good info to at http://ncrenegade.com/communications/
I haven't programmed the radio yet using chirp cause I read that some of these units locked up when doing so but will have to bite the bullet soon.
