Our Medal of Honor Roll Call tour of the 50 states takes up to North Carolina this week, and Jacklyn H. Lucus, a remarkable Marine, who at 17 jumped on two grenades to save his comrades at Iwo Jima and lived–lived until he was 80!
Later in the 1960s, Lucas enlisted in the Army and served with the All-American troopers of the 82nd Airborne Division. On one training jump, both chutes failed–but, he survived, of course.
