I believe that when you put an animal on the ground you have a responsibility to take care of it. Either you put it in your freezer or donate it to a soup kitchen, its a sin to let that much food go to waste.
It occurred to me also that many people may not even equate an animal with food. But you are correct, leaving a mortally wounded animal to die in agony (after trying to defend itself!) is just as wrong.
