Alisher Usmanov, the Arsenal owner and the richest man in Russia, has
bought the Nobel prize that was sold by James Watson, one of three
people who won the prize for discovering the DNA double helix. Usmanov
will now give it straight back to him — leaving Watson with the medal as
well as the record-breaking $4.1 million that Usmanov bought it for.
The sale of the medal — which cost Usmanov $4.8 million including
commission — set a record for the sale of such a medal and was the first
time one has been sold by a living recipient. Usmanov said today that
he would give him back the medal as well as giving him the cash for it.
Usmanov
said that he had been motivated to buy and return the medal to avoid
Watson having to sell it. He values Watson's work because of his
contribution to cancer research, the disease from which Usmanov's father
died, he said.
Wow! What a wonderful story to send me off to sweet sleep ;)
ReplyDelete:) What a gracious act.
DeleteI can't help but wonder if Watson's work in other areas of research entered into Usmanov's decision. Watson's current financial predicament is the result of some rather unpopular genetic conclusions from his later work that the article touches on only briefly at the end of the piece.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I'm not knowledgeable.
DeleteJames Watson is persecuted today because he made the following statements I am, "gloomy about the prospect of Africa," since "our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours—whereas all the testing says not really." He also said, "There is no firm reason to anticipate that the intellectual capacities of peoples geographically separated in their evolution should prove to have evolved identically," including "equal powers of reason."
ReplyDeleteDr. Watson is a perfect example of why we are in such a mess today over race. No one is allowed to speak honestly. If you doubt what he says, follow this link, http://www.photius.com/rankings/national_iq_scores_country_ranks.html. I have read much of what Dr. Watson has said or written. While what he says may not be politically correct, it is still probably true. Saying that and having read much of his, work I have this tingling suspicion Dr. Watson is a racist. However, that does not make what he is saying incorrect.

DeleteThat's what I saw also and everyone in the world has some 'racism' in them. Asians are smarter than Caucasians. And.....? Caucasians are smarter than Hispanics. And....? Hispanics are smarter than blacks. And.....? As my mother would say, "just silliness" Who cares? Obviously we are all different unless some collectivist can come up reasons why whites excel in swimming/hockey, blacks basketball/football, Asians own 90%? percent of nail shops. Such a waste of time even arguing with these PC idiots.
It's "White Privilege" since Asians are the smartest. See how being white puts you on top. Well if you ignore the Asians, we are number one. But still if you are white you don’t have to put forth any effort just walk-in and they hand you a 50k a year job. White Privilege means you never have to try just kick-back and let the world take care of you.

What a deal whites have.......:)
