Former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb is jumping into the race for president, becoming the latest Democrat to try for a primary upset over frontrunner Hillary Clinton.

In a message to supporters obtained by Fox News, and later posted on his website, Webb says: "After many months of thought, deliberation and discussion, I have decided to seek the office of the Presidency of the United States."

Webb's entry brings the total number of Democratic presidential candidates to five.

Clinton continues to dominate the field, though Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders lately has been gaining in the polls.

But Webb, 69, is cut from a far different political cloth than the independent, socialist-leaning Vermont senator.

A highly decorated Vietnam veteran and former secretary of the Navy under the Reagan administration, Webb had been seriously mulling a presidential run since establishing an exploratory committee in November 2014.

  1. Webb wrote "Born Fighting" about the Scots-Irish beginning in 122 AD on the Scotland-English border. 70% of the Confederates were Scots-Irish. It's a great book. Further, he's been defending the Confederate battle flag.

    If there's no one left on the Republican side but liberals like Jeb and Christie by the time it gets to Texas, I'll vote in the Democratic primary for Webb. And if he wins I'll vote for him for president.

  2. Okay - I consider this good news. I know what I like about Jim Webb, so what is there about his real politics that should worry us other than the (D)?

    1. Yes and I believe he would have run as a Republican if he could have.

  3. I was born and indoctrinated a Democrat and in 60 years of voting I have never voted for one. I have regretted leaving Virginia in 1995 and not voting for Webb. Maybe I'll get a chance yet.

    1. As long as you come to the Fall PACON, you will be forgiven.........:) At any rate, D's and R's have changed place for many years.

  4. There are plenty of disparaging posts over on FreeRepublic about Webb's depravity. I don't know if it is accurate or not, but it is based on the novels he has written, this one in particular from 2001, "Lost Soldiers." I think he is describing a scene of what it was like for soldiers who come across grossly different cultural practices in other countries, not an endorsement of said behavior. Don't know because I didn't read the book. Check it out on Post #6.

    1. praised Mr. Obama’s approach of using sanctions against Russia for its support of the rebels in Ukraine.

      Right............ the overthrow of the duly elected government which we instigated? Big X for him.

      =============

      his views have evolved and he now supports it, calling it “a good thing for this country.”

      Only because he's running for office, I believe. He's married to a Vietnamese girl and I doubt this would would be the family consent, but then she is a lawyer.....:)

      Thanks.
