Good News: New NYT/CBS News Poll Shows Americans Oppose Assault Weapons Ban

Via avordvet

Something I forgot to mention in my previous post about the NYT/CBS News poll showing terrorism fears reaching levels not seen since the immediate weeks after the 9/11 attacks–Americans are also not really getting behind the president’s renewed call for a ban on assault rifles. Only 44 percent of Americans support the position, 50 percent oppose it.

The publication noted that support for this unserious gun control policy is now registering 19 points below how the public felt following the 2011 mass shooting in Tucson, Arizona, which almost took the life of former Rep. Gabby Giffords (R-AZ).

  1. Nothing like a sobering of the mind to bring one around to reality.

I had an aunt who worked as the front counter cashier at a bakery near Birmingham Alabama back in the 70's. The first two times she was robbed, the thugs told her it was a holdup, but showed no weapon. Family and friends begged and begged her to quit the job, but she would just laugh about the robberies. The third ( and last time ) she was robbed, the man put the gun, with the hammer pulled back, in her face, close enough for her to see the hollow-point rounds in the cylinder. She there and then decided the supermarket a few blocks away, where everyone from the owner down to the produce manager packed a gun and which had never been robbed, was the place to go to work at; she quit the bakery just as soon as the police finished questioning her, and went to work at the market the next day. She had had a sobering of the mind, up close and personal.
