Postwar Rape: Were Americans As Bad as the Soviets?

Via Nancy

GIs watch German girls swimming in July, 1945 in this image, part of a photo essay for Life magazine.

In the popular imagination, American GIs in postwar Germany were well-liked and well-behaved. But a new book claims that US soldiers raped up to 190,000 women at the end of World War II. Is there any truth to the controversial claim?

The soldiers arrived at dusk. They forced their way into the house and tried to drag the two women upstairs. But Katherine W. and her 18-year-old daughter Charlotte were able to escape.

The soldiers didn't give up easily though. They began searching all the houses in the area and ultimately found the two women in a neighbor's closet shortly before midnight. The men pulled them out and threw them onto two beds. The crime the six soldiers ultimately committed took place in March, 1945, shortly before the end of World War II. The girl cried for help: "Mama. Mama." But none arrived.

Hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of German women experienced a similar fate at the time.

Often, such gang rapes were blamed on Soviet troops in Germany's east. But this case was different. The rapists were soldiers from the United States of America and the crime took place in Sprendlingen, a village near the Rhine River in the west.

  1. I have previously read much about this and was disappointed that no one took issue with my claim that the Allies liberated not only French but also Polish, Italian, and German women in WW II in a recent comment.

It remains to be seen if we have strength to liberate American women. I started a Pinterest board on Women and Guns. I preach now to women "Don't rely on a man, rely on my namesakes (Horace) Smith and Wesson.

Much has been written of our crimes against German prisoners, especially soldiers. Eisenhower was credied with starving 1.2 million of them inside fences where every twig and blade of grass was eaten..Lincoln famously pronounced about the starving Lakotah Sioux "Let them eat grass." We deify men who don't deserve it. Caveat:I voted for Ike in 1956. Never, thankfully, for the beast Lincoln.

From deep conviction I simply say this: a nation of men of Lee's calibre would be unconquerable in spirit and soul.

  2. American atrocities vs the Soviet Union - so close it would
be hard to separate. The atrocities by the Poles to the
Germans which precipitated Germany to attack Poland - They included 19 year-old girls with their faces smashed, amputations, disembowelments, shot thru' the eye, death-trauma births, you name it. Poles had been merrily slaughtering anything or anybody German since at least as early as April 1939, with smaller incidents stretching back to the close of WW I -- you haven't been told that by the Mass Media, or the fact that these atrocities were one of the main causes for the German invasion of Poland, something that was meant by the Germans to be a local solution to a local problem. And in the mean time the Soviet Union was attacking
Poland from the East but not a word was ever whispered as
the target was Germany. If Chamberlain had not been screwed
by the fat drunken slob, Churchill, there never would have
been a WWII as he announced after meeting with Hitler to his
country, "there will be no war with Germany."

  3. Read further into the article and we find that the claim is by a woman with an agenda who "extrapolates" the rapes she claims occurred. I'll take the hard evidence and first-hand accounts as compiled by the German priests, thanks.

    1. I'm sure Africans were in no way running anywhere near the Russians.
