It wouldn’t matter if the U.S. had one troop on the ground in Syria and if Russia had ten thousand — Russia’s presence has been sanctioned under international law and America’s hasn’t.
On February 16, 2018, Bloomberg’s Eli Lake published an article entitled “Don’t Be Fooled: Russia Attacked U.S. Troops in Syria.”
For context, the U.S.-led coalition conducted air and artillery strikes against what was believed to be pro-government forces in Syria on February 7, 2018, in response to an “unprovoked attack” launched by these pro-regime forces. Not long after, reports began emerging that significant numbers of Russian personnel were included in the over 100 dead and wounded, though Russia denied this at first. As the evidence began to mount, the accepted version of events on both sides was that those involved were Russian mercenaries and contractors, not official troops.

ReplyDeleteWell he left out the part where the "pro-government forces" are exterminating civilians, men, women and children. I suppose we can ignore that some people (like the author) may have no problem with that. But if we decide to try to stop at least some of the indiscriminate do we "need" an international group or law to allow us to save lives??? I think not.
I hate the wars in the Middle East and on one level I would like us to stay out of them. But I also know we are one of their targets as is Israel and if we simply ignore them all eventually they will bring the war to us and it will/must quickly become nuclear. Knowing this, should we still choose to do nothing??? It's not a tough question. What we are asking is should we intervene on a small level to prevent massive killing and a nuclear war? Or should we do what the author wants and let the UN decide what we can and cannot do? Simple as that!
The U.S. is still the invading country as it was in 1861.
