Elon Musk making “kid-sized submarine” to rescue teens in Thailand cave

Via Michael

"Construction complete in about 8 hours," the tech billionaire tweeted Saturday.

Elon Musk tweeted on Saturday that a team of SpaceX engineers is hours away from completing work on a "tiny kid-sized submarine" that could be used to extract 12 teenagers and preteens who are stranded with their soccer coach in a flooded cave in Thailand. Musk has had a team of engineers working on the problem for the last couple of days and has been keeping the world updated on the work via Twitter.

On Thursday night, Musk tweeted about an idea to use an inflatable nylon tube to help the kids escape. By Friday afternoon, Musk's thinking had evolved. He tweeted that his team was working on building "double-layer Kevlar pressure pods with Teflon coating to slip by rocks." A mid-day tweet on Saturday provided another update:

  1. The most subsidized human being on the planet will spend a butt load of our tax dollars on a project that will never see the light of day. He is really just looking for another few minutes in the spotlight. These kids will either be rescued in the next 24 hours, or they, God forbid, will have drowned. Either way Elon's kid sized sub won't be ready for action; let alone fabricated, tested, delivered to the remote site and put into operation. It would only move one kid at a time, there are twelve kids, a coach, and X number of rescuers that are in need of immediate evacuation. Hmmmm, nice try Elon, it all sounds good on paper, but reality has a way of messing with us all. How is that Tesla doing up there in space. Just another waste of money I fear.

  3. I hear-by revise/elevate my original thoughts about the most subsidized man on earth. This idea is REALLY BRILLIANT with long term growth potential for all sorts of rescue missions. Thanks Brock for not posting my first thought about this subject. Talk about open mouth, insert both feet. Sheeze Louise, read the entire article maybe, before yapping away, and saying something stupid, albeit rather embarrassing to boot. Please forgive me. I SINCERELY hope and pray that something can be done for these young men and their rescuers SOON.
