WALTER WILLIAMS: The electoral college debate

Democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, seeking to represent New York's 14th Congressional District, has called for the abolition of the Electoral College. Her argument came on the heels of the Senate's confirming Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. She was lamenting the fact that Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito, nominated by George W. Bush, and Justices Neil Gorsuch and Kavanaugh, nominated by Donald Trump, were court appointments made by presidents who lost the popular vote but won the Electoral College vote.

Hillary Clinton has long been a critic of the Electoral College. Just recently, she wrote in The Atlantic, "You won't be surprised to hear that I passionately believe it's time to abolish the Electoral College."

  1. Uneducated idiots! It's the united States. The President is elected by the States in 50 separate elections. An individual person's vote has more value in that system. But then that's part of "the guarantee of a republican form of government" (Article IV, Section 4) which they despise. No wonder, it was Lenin who said, "democracy is indespinsible to socialism". --Ron W

  2. Our founders disdained a democracy as a form of government. Our Constitution constrains the democratic process. Part of the was taken away with the 17th Amendment, by which U.S. Senators are elected with massive outside-the-States influence and money instead of bring appointed or elected by State Legislatures to represent the interests of each State in Congress. --Ron W
