Scottish Benchrest Shooter Posts Record-Breaking 3-Inch 1000-Yard Group with Factory Savage Rifle

As gun manufacturers crank out higher quality production rifles, custom-barreled actions are becoming less necessary for shooting crazy-small groups. It’s tough to beat a skilled gunsmith, but shooters are realizing that a factory piece can be nearly as accurate and just as much fun.

That trend was on full display earlier this month when Scottish benchrest shooter David Sharp (yes, his real name) posted a 3.090-inch 1000-yard group using a Savage Model 12 F-TR barreled action chambered in .308 WIN, according to a report from AccurateShooter.com. That group set the UK record in the Factory Sporter Class, and his aggregate for all four five-shot groups (6.756 inches) also beat the previous 1000-yard UK record in that class.

  1. Amazing!!

True story though certainly NOT at that level.

Anyway, friend of mine and I headed out to the range one day. He had an out of the box Savage 308 with a Bushnell scope. I had a Remington 700 PSS with a Leupold Vari x III.

We were shooting at 100 yards off of sand bags and I knew the fellow could shoot but thought my extra $$$ for the equipment might tilt the advantage in my favor so we made a little side bet on a 3 shot group.

After we each shot we looked thought the spotting scope but were having a bit of trouble reading his group. We go down to the targets and, with a bit of luck, I had 2 holes overlapping and a total group size of 1/4 inch....sadly...he had 3 in the same hole. In fact if the hole hadn't been a bit ragged I'd have thought he had missed to shots but there was no doubt...the were in the same hole.

I decided not to make any more bets with him regarding shooting.

    Y'all have a nice day.
