    1. Jane Mansfield was killed when the car she was riding in rear ended a tractor trailer and the car sub-marined under the trailer. The accident got the attention of the DOT which mandated that a steel bar go down to act as a bumper at car level bumpers. It was to stop accidents like the one posted. The only problem is that if a car is traveling extremely fast the Mansfield bar cuts the car in half like above - simple physics.

  3. Mansfield bar is the framework that hangs down to prevent cars from going under the trailer. Some, as this one appears, are full width. Wouldn't surprise me that this one is still intact. Judging by the damage I can see. These newer cars are very lightly built.

    1. Yes and I remember at one of the PATCONS a para-Medic described the time when it arrived at a scene and a lady said help the driver first but he told her to look at the top of the drivers head which had been cut off from front to back.
