Moles?

We are continually battling moles and holes as above appear periodically.  I read that baby moles come to the surface when first born and others do the same if something is wrong. Any ideas?  Thanks.

  1. Brock, I heard a story once upon a time, about the papa mole who came up out of his hole, early one fine morning. He looked around and saw way down the hill, the old farmer's house. Papa mole took a big ole whiff of the morning air. He exclaimed with excitement, that he could smell pancakes. Well Momma mole, and Baby mole, heard what Papa mole had said and they both tried to squeeze into the hole with papa. Mama of course made it, but Baby mole did not. Mama mole looked around. She squealed about the pancakes, and claimed that she could smell bacon cooking too. Now don't you know that this bit of news was just too much for the lil Baby mole who was trying so hard to squeeze up into the hole that his parents were blocking. Giving up after several attempts he sighed, and said in a very disappointed voice, Ohhh, all I can smell is Molasses.

    THAT'S ALL FOLKS, THE END!

  2. When I lived in Oregon the moles were bigger than rats and left mounds 2 inches high and 6 inches in diameter. They could destroy a garden or well manicured lawn in a couple of days. Had a neighbor who would sit on his porch and smoke them with double ought. He said it was easier to fill a shot gun divit once than half a dozen mole mounds that would come right back.

I also had a Datsun Bluebird later (mentioned before) which someone kept stealing the fan out of (no A/C) until I bought an alarm system, and the next night they stole it again and the alarm didn't even go of! Boy, was I pissed, so that night, I stayed up until the wee hours of the morning lying prone on my porch with my M-2 in wait of the culprit who, of course, never came. I can't remember, but I think I just did without a fan from then on.

  3. We have Colombian Ground Squirrels. Or Rascals as my grandson calls them. We’ve kept him busy this summer letting him trap them. I have most of my garden in raised beds with hardware cloth(wire) in the bottom so they can’t get in. They are cheeky too, they and the chipmunks go into the hen house and steal food.

    1. Thanks and I now understand that the small holes are from Voles to accompany the many Moles I have! :) We haven't lost any vegetables so far just a few flowers but it's an everyday task keeping them away. You can send your grandson here after you're finished with him! :)

  4. Haha! That boy is a handful, he runs the wheels off of me! Even trapping them they are a nuisance. It’s my understanding that moles, voles (we have those too), ground hogs, and Colombian Squirrels hate daffodils. Something in the bulbs, so I am going to plant brigades of them. Even if it doesn’t help they will be cheerful on a cloudy, rainy spring day here on the Pacific Northwest.

    1. Brilliant minds.... We have two old bathtubs in the house and one in the field. Just today we cleaned it up, painted the outside gray and are going to plant 48 bulbs of Daffodils in memory of my Mother. :)I'll post the picture later on.

  5. Try a vibratory roller like the one available for the Bobcat skidsteer. They have the vibrations. I drive them from my property here in MT with one.

  6. Put castor beans in the holes and cover up. Worked for me. Castor beans are poisonous.

  8. Probably pocket gophers, by the hole size and lack of mound.

  9. Free range chickens and a couple of Guinea's. I've seen my
chickens peck moles to death. Moles don't come around my
home area much anymore. They know.

    1. :) Thanks. I hope that my Carolina dog will help when he comes here as they have a high prey drive.

  10. I was wondering about your Carolina Dog and if he had arrived.
He, hopefully, will be a game dog. My Cairn Terrier was and
would dig the whole mole trench. Sometimes he would dig one up
    and kill the mole.
