  1. You have to consider this is Rhode Island. The single most corrupt state in the Union. Where else can a Mafia lawyer become first the Speaker of the State House of Representatives and then be nominated and confirmed as Chief Justice of the State Supreme Court?
Worse, filling it taking 12 years to drive him off the bench his some was soon chosen as Speaker!
It got so bad that the citizen forced through a ballot initiative creating an independent commission to examine all proposed legislation to make sure that legislators or their donors are going to profit from it.

  2. Gladly. Joseph Bevalaqua's primary client was Raymond Patraca, head of the Mob in SE New England. The Feds had a tap on his phone and recorded him giving the orders to dispose of the Marfio brothers for refusing to move their floating crap game off of Federal Hill which was the largest Italian neighborhood in Providence. He was subsequently convicted of conspiracy to murder. At his parole hearing Bevalaqua argued that the FBI could keep a closer eye on him if he were released than they could in a jail cell. He was of course released.

  3. And then there was the Newport Bridge fiasco. At the time it was the 4th largest suspension bridge in the world. RI required Bethlehem Steel to use a particular "rust resistant" paint manufactured by a local company with mob ties. It was crap and requires constant repainting. RI sued Bethlehem alleging they used the wrong paint and held up all payments for the thousands of tons of steel used in constructing the bridge. The case dragged on so long (RI eventually lost) but the lack of revenue contributed directly in Bethlehem Steel going into bankruptcy and cost thousands of jobs.

  4. No way in hell! In the year and a half before I married my Carolina bride of 43 years 6 people I knew died in "accidents." Another was run off the road and turned into a paraplegic. I was among another group that took opportunities to go elsewhere. Needless to say none of us were angels.
But the picture of the RI mob painted in The Sopranos is pretty accurate. They're f..ing nuts.
Watch the movie "The Vault" for a glimpse of how brazenly and openly the mob operated in RI.
