I walked into a military exercise in my front yard on Monday

Via Jack

Old, but I just read it.

I'm gonna make this short - I tried to post last night but it timed me out before I could post. First off, I don't buy into most of the conspiracy theories and I've never seen a UFO or anything like that. But you ain't gonna believe what happened Monday night.

I live on the outskirts of Cherryville, NC. Little town in the sticks. No military bases around here and the closest Guard Armory is on the other side of the county. Monday night, at about 2:30, I went outside to smoke. And while I'm standing there I hear someone running down the street in front of my house. I turn to my right, look up the street and I see a glow stick flopping up and down, attached to a soldier. Yeah, a freaking soldier. The dude is humping it down the road like he's being chased. I yelled for him to stop and he jogs across my yard and walks right up to me and introduces himself - says his name is Sergeant Carr. I shook the guy's hand and asked him what was going on and he says "we're running an exercise." So I say "is everything all right?" And he says "yes" and I say "so nothing is going on, nothing's wrong?" and he says "no, nothing's wrong, we're running an exercise" and he says he has to go. Friendly dude, completely lucid. The thing is he's in full battle rattle. I mean light gray digital camo BDUs, a big ruck on his back that looked full to me, a glow stick on the front of his harness AND he's carrying an M4 slung down under his right arm.

Since nothing like this EVER happens around here I was shocked and didn't think to ask the guy 20 questions.

Booker T. Washington on slavery

Roundabout via Billy

  • I pity from the bottom of my heart any nation or body of people that is so unfortunate as to get entangled in the net of slavery. I have long since ceased to cherish any spirit of bitterness against the Southern white people on account of the enslavement of my race. No one section of our country was wholly responsible for its introduction, and, besides, it was recognized and protected for years by the General Government.

  • Having once got its tentacles fastened on to the economic and social life of the Republic, it was no easy matter for the country to relieve itself of the institution. Then, when we rid ourselves of prejudice, or racial feeling, and look facts in the face, we must acknowledge that, notwithstanding the cruelty and moral wrong of slavery, the ten million Negroes inhabiting this country, who themselves or whose ancestors went through the school of American slavery, are in a stronger and more hopeful condition, materially, intellectually, morally, and religiously, than is true of an equal number of black people in any other portion of the globe.

  • This is so to such an extend that Negroes in this country, who themselves or whose forefathers went through the school of slavery, are constantly returning to Africa as missionaries to enlighten those who remained in the fatherland. This I say, not to justify slavery — on the other hand, I condemn it as an institution, as we all know that in America it was established for selfish and financial reasons, and not from a missionary motive — but to call attention to a fact, and to show how Providence so often uses men and institutions to accomplish a purpose.

More Notes on Developing Training Programs

Wars, battles, and fights are not won on the battlefield. They are won on the training field and in the classroom. It is great that we all have the ability (remarkably) to go out and spend ridiculous amounts of money on fighting rifles and MOLLE-compatible load-bearing equipment, and night-observation devices (NODs), and ballistic armor and plate carriers. Unfortunately, even those who talk about training, too often do not have any real concept of what skills they need to learn and master, nor how to develop an effective training program to learn and teach them.

It is incumbent upon each of us to not only learn to execute critical individual and collective combat skills tasks, but also to learn to TEACH these skills to others when it becomes necessary to expand our defenses beyond our close-knit groups of friends and neighbors, to create local civilian irregular defense groups (CIDG) to protect our communities. This article will discuss some conceptual theory behind developing training programs, as well as describe the most basic individual critical skills tasks that must be mastered by any irregular paramilitary resistance fighter, regardless of his/her operational area environment.

Like many military units, but even more so, resistance elements do not have the time or resources to achieve and sustain proficiency, let alone mastery, of every possible training task. Leaders and resistance cell trainers must identify those tasks that are their units critical wartime tasks. These then become the element's mission-essential task list (METL). It is then necessary to determine and train the individual skills tasks that will allow the element to accomplish their METL.

VERBATIM POST

After Qaddafi is shot dead, Mubarak is sentenced to life in prison:
For nearly 30 years he was the pharaoh-like ruler whose word was law; the plunderer of billions of pounds of government money and controller of Egypt’s brutal police state. On Saturday night Hosni Mubarak began a new life as a convicted murderer. A broken and humiliated man of 84, he was flown by helicopter to Torah prison - where many of his enemies had once been jailed - just two hours after hearing a Cairo judge pronounce a life sentence on him for complicity in the murder of 850 protesters.
Well, if Western leaders are looking to make sure that Assad and the remaining Arab dictators fight to the very last drop of their people's blood, they're certainly going about it the right way. If you want to get rid of a rat, always leave him a safe out.

Just letting you know your neighbors’ political contributions

Despicable.

Ann Althouse (via Instapundit) has a post about a mailer she received from a pro-Recall group in Wisconsin telling her which of her neighbors voted and which did not in the past several years. Althouse’s reaction:

This is an effort to shame and pressure people about voting, and it is truly despicable. Your vote is private, you have a right not to vote, and anyone who tries to shame and an harass you about it is violating your privacy, and the assumption that I will become active in shaming and pressuring my neighbors is repugnant.

Not voting is a valid choice. If you don’t have a preference in the election, don’t vote. If you think no one deserves your vote, don’t vote.

This may be the most disgusting thing I have ever received in the mail.

A few days ago a reader sent me a mailer he received telling him the political contributions of his neighbors. He wrote:

Fellow Floridians and Patriots,

I’m sure you all know that the hour is late and a great challenge lies before us.

Now is the time to network and build alliances.

Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis said Friday she wanted to allow for unemployment benefits to be used for people to start their own businesses in an interview with Fox Business:

Space Cadet of the Day: Pelosi: 'I know the Constitution'

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said the Supreme Court will uphold the constitutionality of President Barack Obama’s health care law, predicting a 6-3 decision because, as she remarked, “I know the Constitution.”

Asked why she was so confident about her prediction: "Do you have a crystal ball or what is your confidence, you wrote the bill but why do you have this confidence?"

Pelosi said: “Because I know the Constitution. This bill is ironclad. It is ironclad.”
