Out of Wedlock Birth Rates High in America; End of Shotgun Weddings Partially to Blame

 

The proportion of mothers who are unmarried is at 40 percent, up from five percent in 1960; two-thirds of first births to women under 30 are to unwed women. Determining why out-of-wedlock pregnancy and birth has spiked is the subject of a new report, released Monday, from the Social Capital Project.

The Social Capital Project (SCP), spearheaded by Sen. Mike Lee (R., Utah) is an ongoing project of Congress's Joint Economic Committee to measure the breakdown in what Lee and others talk about as "associational life" in America. That refers to the institutions—churches, schools, teams, and other civic organizations—which connect Americans and mediate between the individual and the state.

The terror suspect who allegedly attempted to detonate a suicide-bomb in New York came to the United States from Bangladesh as a “chain migration” relative of an individual who had immigrated earlier into the United States.

In October, President Donald Trump called for an end to this “chain migration” process in his immigration principles.

Bakery Branded ‘Racist’ After Shopkeeper Assaulted by Three Black Students Who Were Shoplifting

An Ohio bakery has filed a lawsuit against Oberlin College and its dean for slander, after the establishment was branded as “racist” after three black men assaulted the shopkeeper and were arrested for attempting to steal wine.

The men had claimed that they were simply trying to purchase the wine from Gibson’s Bakery using fake identification cards, but pleaded guilty to attempted theft and aggravated trespassing in August. Campus Reform reports that part of their plea agreement included an admission that their actions were wrong and that the store had no racist intentions.

Allyn Gibson, the person working at the shop at the time, was repeatedly accused of racial profiling after being assaulted by the men — though no evidence was ever provided of his alleged racism. The Oberlin Student Senate even passed a resolution claiming that Gibson had “a history of racial profiling and discriminatory treatment.”

“Racism can’t always be proven on an Excel sheet,” Kameron Dunbar, an Oberlin junior and vice chair of the student senate, told the Chicago Tribune.

NHS asks 10-year-olds if they are 'comfortable in their gender' in school survey

Ten-year-old children are being asked by the NHS whether they are "comfortable in their gender" in official health surveys being completed in schools, it has emerged.

The form given to children in year six to complete asks: "Do you feel the same inside as the gender you were born with? (feeling male or female)".

Youngsters are also asked to tick a box to confirm their true gender, with options including "boy", "girl" and "other". 

Parents have been told that the NHS survey helps healthcare workers and teachers develop "better ways to understand and support" children who may be struggling with their identity - but it is not known whether certain children will be approached based on their answers.

Students don't seem to be getting much out of higher education.

 have been in school for more than 40 years. First preschool, kindergarten, elementary school, junior high, and high school. Then a bachelor’s degree at UC Berkeley, followed by a doctoral program at Princeton. The next step was what you could call my first “real” job—as an economics professor at George Mason University.

Thanks to tenure, I have a dream job for life. Personally, I have no reason to lash out at our system of higher education. Yet a lifetime of experience, plus a quarter century of reading and reflection, has convinced me that it is a big waste of time and money. When politicians vow to send more Americans to college, I can’t help gasping, “Why? You want us to waste even more?”

Email: FBI Told Sessions He Didn’t Need to Disclose Contacts With Russian Ambassador

A newly released email bolsters Attorney General Jeff Sessions' claim that he only failed to disclose contacts with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. on a form because an FBI agent told him that he did not have to do so.

In May, CNN broke the news that Sessions "did not disclose meetings he had last year with Russian officials when he applied for his security clearance," calling it "the latest example of Sessions failing to disclose contacts he had with Russian officials."

Bangladeshi cab driver, 27, in a suicide vest who caused rush-hour panic in Manhattan when his 'revenge' pipe bomb exploded too early

 

A Bangladeshi national in his 20s has been taken into custody with serious injuries after a pipe bomb he was carrying malfunctioned and exploded prematurely inside a Midtown Manhattan subway station Monday morning. 

It was the second time in two months that New York City was the target of a terrorist attack, and the first since President Trump sparked Muslim outrage around the world last week by recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital.  

The explosion happened around 7:20am, in an underground tunnel linking the Port Authority Bus Terminal to Times Square. The underground tunnel is a major thoroughfare for workers during the morning rush hour.

The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Akayed Ullah, was walking east towards Times Square when a 'low-tech' explosive attached to his body with Velcro and zip ties partially exploded. Another five-inch metal pipe bomb was found on his person.

Despite pleading guilty to a hate crime, aggravated battery and intimidation, Cook County Circuit Judge William Hooks let her off without prison time.

“As part of a plea deal, prosecutors dropped additional charges, including kidnapping,” the Chicago Tribune reports.

Calling the incident “horrific,” Cook County Circuit Judge William Hooks banned Covington from social media over the four years, prohibited her from contact with two of her co-defendants and ordered her to do 200 hours of community service.
