Two Comments on A Red Wave? So What?

A Red Wave? So What?

BigCountry discusses the destruction of Dresden by allied bombing.

.
He suggests the Dresden area was a refugee center, a safe place for the 'displaced'.
Apparently, the allies waited until about 700,000 refugees joined the 500,000 residents...
...then turned the place to unlivable rubble.
.
The American propaganda machine claims ** only ** 21,000 civilian non-combatants perished.
Could their assessment be in error by a factor of 7,000% (seven thousand percent)?
.
My 'presentism' is offended by:
a -- the loss of life
b -- targeting non-combatant civilians and their civilization
c -- targeting a refugee zone
d-- timing the atrocities for the maximum deaths of refugees.
.
Again, I strongly recommend the book SUPERMOB by Russo.
Can you imagine everything you know is wrong.

Every. Single. Time.

Great text, and his follow up A RENEGADE HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES, put a spotlight on the legal syndicate among many other underhanded organizations.

When, the summer before last, the results of the first Covid wave began to be tallied in the media, there were different ways of measuring the devastation. One way of looking at the pandemic was to focus on how many people died — more than half a million around the world by the end of June. Another was to try assessing the complicated impacts of the various measures taken to combat the virus. When a lot of the functions in society were frozen, people struggled — especially the most vulnerable.

Save Lee Chapel

 Via Billy

One of the true treasures of Washington and Lee's campus is under threat from the administration and it's time to fight back. In Lee Chapel (which it now calls University Chapel), all plaques and portraits have come down. A giant dividing wall is going up. The chapel is already stark and bare without its memorials to heroic students and historic portraits. Soon, it will be unrecognizable.

A Red Wave? So What?

There is a vast political swell among some ill-informed conservatives that the great mid-term elections will come and a tide of goodness (spelled R-E-P-U-B-L-I-C-A-N) will sweep over the grand land, often puerilely referred to as “American exceptionalism,” for everyone.

Everyone but conservatives, however. Yes, that’s what I meant.  Conservatives are republicans. Republicans are Republicans. They aren’t goodness or even good. They love lobbyists and their wars and printed money as much as their “loyal” opposition loves it. Conservatives are the few. Republicans and Democrats are the many.

They both live politically on the blood lust of “presentism” –look it up—but don’t reach for public teachers in any educational offering for it. Without it, the past is not, indeed, prologue.

Anyway,

A Box from Greg Which I Do Appreciate

Into the Valley of Death: A Relevant History of Crimea

The Charge of the Light Brigade

“…All in the valley of Death

Rode the six hundred.

‘Forward, the Light Brigade!

Charge for the guns’ he said.

Into the valley of Death

Rode the six hundred.”

——————-

“Cannon to right of them,

Cannon to left of them,

Cannon in front of them

Volleyed and thundered.

Stormed at with shot and shell,

Boldly they rode and well,

Into the jaws of Death,

Into the mouth of hell

Rode the six hundred.”

Used to recite this to Bonnie and Christine.  (Bonnie was scared as I read it)

Many are familiar with Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s famous poem that followed by a few days the newspaper reports of a military disaster for British forces at the Battle of Balaclava on October 25, 1854. It took place in Crimea, which is very much in the news today because of the present war between Russia and Ukraine.

The Crimean War from 1853 to 1856 was between the British Empire and its allies (principally France and the Ottoman Turks) and the Russian Empire. Crimea had been part of the Russian Empire since 1783. The Battle of Balaclava was part of the siege of Sevastopol, Russia’s principal naval base on the Black Sea.

Fascism Comes to America And it wasn't Trump who imposed it.

Over the past few years the people of the United States have suffered the most egregious and sustained criminal actions committed against them by their own government officials in collaborations with private and public corporations. This is in absolute conflict with the rule of law and the constitution and it’s a violation of our rights to determine our own destiny. That these government officials and corporations have been successful in pointing the finger of blame at each of us when addressing others of us is just insult piled upon the injury they’ve committed.
