Wheelin’ and Dealin’ in Machine Guns

Reminder: NWFLA PatCon: June 9-10, Pine Log State Forest
I’m sure you all know that the hour is late and a great challenge lies before us.
Now is the time to network and build alliances.
I have secured a location for a meet and greet at Pine Log State Forest:
Dershowitz: Zimmerman Prosecutor Threatening to Sue Harvard for My Criticism
Alan M. Dershowitz’s Perspective: State Attorney Angela Corey, the prosecutor in the George Zimmerman case, recently called the Dean of Harvard Law School to complain about my criticism of some of her actions.
She was transferred to the Office of Communications and proceeded to engage in a 40-minute rant, during which she threatened to sue Harvard Law School, to try to get me disciplined by the Bar Association and to file charges against me for libel and slander.
When the communications official explained to her that I have a right to express my opinion as “a matter of academic freedom,” and that Harvard has no control over what I say, she did not seem to understand.
She persisted in her nonstop whining, claiming that she is prohibited from responding to my attacks by the rules of professional responsibility — without mentioning that she has repeatedly held her own press conferences and made public statements throughout her career.
Her beef was that I criticized her for filing a misleading affidavit that willfully omitted all information about the injuries Zimmerman had sustained during the “struggle” it described. She denied that she had any obligation to include in the affidavit truthful material that was favorable to the defense.
She insisted that she is entitled to submit what, in effect, were half truths in an affidavit of probable cause, so long as she subsequently provides the defense with exculpatory evidence.
She should go back to law school, where she will learn that it is never appropriate to submit an affidavit that contains a half truth, because a half truth is regarded by the law as a lie, and anyone who submits an affidavit swears to tell the truth.

Hello, Heterogeneity
Between 1948, when American National Election Studies first surveyed the electorate, and 1970, the percentage of voters who were white didn’t change much, ranging from 89 to 91 percent.
ANES didn’t begin breaking out data on mainline and evangelical Protestants until 1960. Traditional mainline Protestants – including Episcopalians, Presbyterians, Methodists and Lutherans — constituted a decisive plurality of the electorate at 45 percent. Evangelicals stood at 29 percent and Catholics at 20 percent. Only one percent defined their religion as “none.”
By 2008, whites had fallen to 74 percent of the electorate. The following chart, produced by Alan Abramowitz, a political scientist at Emory, shows the minority (“other non-white” and “black”) share of the vote from 1992 (13 percent) to 2008 (26 percent), with an estimate for 2020 (34 percent).
Gun auctions
Keep in mind that while these may be legitimate deals, lots of people lose money on every bid, too. For example, let's look at that "Glock of Choice" at $28. If you buys your bids in bulk, the best deal you get is about 65 cents per bid. As a penny auction, a final sale prince of $28 means that 2,800 bids were made, so customers paid a total of $1,820 in bids for that $525 Glock. Nice day's work for Bud's, who gets to pocket $1,295 profit. If you're the guy who won the bid, you probably dropped about 250 bids to win it, so you really paid about $190.50 ($28 plus $162.50 in bids) for a $525 pistol. Still a nice deal, but there's probably another 15 guys who dropped 150 bids a piece for that same auction. So, they spent $97.50 and got NOTHING for it.
Bud's is pretty good in that they will let you buy the item at retail with a discount based on the bids you spent (so if you dropped $75 in bids, you can buy the gun for $450; the retail price, minus 50 cents per bid you cast in that auction). Keep in mind, though, that the bid discount is less than the bid price. If you dropped 150 bids, then buy off the discount, you'll end up paying $547.50 for a gun that cost $525. So, if you were going to buy the item, and were willing to pay the retail cost (or even slightly over it), go ahead bid, but understand that you will probably end up paying *more* than retail. You're paying the extra money for the fun and excitement of the bid, and that thousand-to-one chance to come out ahead.
BTW, sometimes Bud's does come out losing. I have seen a $500 pistol sell for $4.03 (about a $230 loss for Bud's), but most guns sell for between $25 and $50 ($1,625 and $3,250 in bids), and I've seen a $399 pistol sell for $101.68, for a profit of $6,311.88 for that one pistol. It's not a scam, but make sure you know what you're getting into.
Louisiana's bold bid to privatize schools
Louisiana is embarking on the nation's boldest experiment in privatizing public education, with the state preparing to shift tens of millions in tax dollars out of the public schools to pay private industry, businesses owners and church pastors to educate children.
Starting this fall, thousands of poor and middle-class kids will get vouchers covering the full cost of tuition at more than 120 private schools across Louisiana, including small, Bible-based church schools.
The following year, students of any income will be eligible for mini-vouchers that they can use to pay a range of private-sector vendors for classes and apprenticeships not offered in traditional public schools. The money can go to industry trade groups, businesses, online schools and tutors, among others.
Every time a student receives a voucher of either type, his local public school will lose a chunk of state funding.
"We are changing the way we deliver education," said Governor Bobby Jindal, a Republican who muscled the plan through the legislature this spring over fierce objections from Democrats and teachers unions. "We are letting parents decide what's best for their children, not government."

Three school bullies 'doused teenager in flammable liquid, set him on fire and left him to burn alive'
Michael Bent, 17, faces trial on attempted murder charges that carry a potential 30-year prison sentence.
The day he was set on fire, Michael Brewer didn't attend classes at his middle school because he was afraid he might get beaten up by some other boys.
It was a Monday in October 2009, the day after his 15th birthday. There had been a dispute between Brewer and Matthew 'Zeke' Bent over a video game and a bicycle that led to Bent's arrest.
'Zeke wanted revenge on Michael,' said Jesus 'Junior' Mendez, who would take part in the attack on Brewer, which drew national attention for its barbarity and the youthfulness of those involved.
Mendez would later plead no contest to attempted murder. 'Zeke's the main one. It was Zeke's idea.'
Bent, now 17, faces a trial in June on attempted murder charges that carry a potential 30-year prison sentence because a weapon was used. He has pleaded not guilty.
Mendez and a third boy, 17-year-old Denver 'D.C.' Jarvis, have already admitted their roles in setting Brewer ablaze and have been sentenced to 11 years and eight years behind bars, respectively.
Police video and audio recordings made by the seven boys involved and several other witnesses give an account of a chance discovery and a split-second decision that almost killed Brewer.
As it was, he spent months in the hospital with second- and third-degree burns over more than two-thirds of his body.
The chain of events began at a neighborhood park on October 11, 2009 - Brewer's birthday.
Bent approached Brewer and demanded that Brewer buy from him a video game based on the Little Mermaid movie. Brewer refused and walked home, with Bent following.
Once they reached the Brewer home, police say Bent tried to steal a bicycle and also stood on the street yelling threats at Brewer family members, even challenging Brewer's father to come outside and fight.
'He came to my house. He tried to take my dad's bike. He threatened me. He threatened my sister. He goes, 'Don't worry, I got something for you and your friends, too,'' Brewer told police. 'It was because he wanted me to buy something from him that I didn't want to buy.'
Fearing retaliation, Brewer's parents notified school administrators they were keeping him home the following day. A little after school let out at 2:40pm, Brewer decided to walk over to a friend's house.
At the same time, Bent was wheeling around the neighborhood on his bicycle. He hadn't gone to school, either.
A group of other boys including Jarvis and Mendez were walking home from school near an older, pink-colored apartment complex called Lime Tree Village when they came upon Bent.
One of them, Calvin Kenny, said Bent was saying things like 'who snitched on me, who got me locked up? He was, like, mad.' Other boys said Bent offered them $5 each if they would punch Brewer.

Very seldom have political upheavals not elevated the very worst to the very highest positions. Moreover, the "very worst" are aware of this, which is why one finds a disproportionate number of the unscrupulous—the liars, the thugs, the embezzlers, and miscellaneous other blackguards—in the strategy councils of left-oriented movements... Note that almost as soon as Barack Hussein Obama took office, he began to elevate the worst of his lieutenants to the highest positions available.

Haiti is the second free nation of the Western Hemisphere and the world's first black republic. Yet in 2001 – almost two centuries' freedom notwithstanding – Haiti remains more underdeveloped than much of Africa from which it emerged. Haiti is not merely the poorest country in the hemisphere but one of the poorest anywhere.
