Farmer wins political signs case

Judge: Sign ordinance is unconstitutional

A local farmer and his supporters celebrated in court Thursday after a judge ruled a Gaines Township sign ordinance unconstitutional.

The Township had cited Vern Verduin for political signs he posted on the side of two semi-trucks in his pasture along M-6. One sign reads "Marxism/Socialism = Poverty & hunger." The other reads "Obama's 'mission accomplished.' 8% unemployment. 16 trillion debt."

The Township zoning ordinance limits political signs to 20 square feet and Verduin's are much larger. The Township does allow significantly larger commercial signs.

Verduin considered the Township's position censorship and a violation of his right to free speech.

Thursday, Judge Steven Servaas of Kent County's 63rd District Court said Verduin may keep his signs.

"In this application in this case that it is unconstitutional because of the distinction between political and commercial signs," Servaas said.

Servaas said the law has to treat commercial and political speech the same.

Economists: Obamacare, Not Sequestration, a Factor in "Awful" March Jobs Numbers

James Pethokoukis @JimPethokoukis
10.98%: What the unemployment rate would be if labor force participation was the same as in January 2009

Kevin reviewed many of the numbers earlier, calling today's report "mediocre."  I'd say that's generous:

Employers added a disappointing 88,000 jobs in March, confirming fears of a slowdown in payroll growth that economists say could persist for several months. The number of new jobs is less than half what economists had forecast. The unemployment rate fell to 7.6% from 7.7%, largely because 496,000 Americans stopped working or looking for work, the Labor Department said Friday in its monthly employment report. Futures trading on Wall Street in major indexes began sinking as soon as the report was released. And investors fled to the safety of U.S. Treasury bonds, where prices soared and yields plummeted.
Former CBO director Douglas Holtz-Eakin describes the totality of the new report as "awful." Few liberal economists can muster the strength to disagree.  The civilian workforce participation rate is the real story today, with nearly half-a-million Americans giving up looking for work.  Perversely, this allowed the official U-3 unemployment rate to tick down by a notch, but analysts from across the spectrum recognize that result as fool's gold.  The participation rate is now a paltry 63.3 percent, the lowest it's been since 1978.  This is a very disappointing report, which Obama cheerleaders will try to blame on his sequester cuts -- which, in turn, they'll try to blame on Republicans.  But these are pre-sequester numbers.  Before the furloughs.  Before any possible layoffs.  Don't ask me, ask Obama's favorite economist:

Shop that sold gun to Newtown shooter's mom loses license

Because we're the self-anointed  "Only Ones" who can do anything we wish. We especially excel in the illegal.
Shelley Clemens, said Friday that she and her husband still don't know why the ATF revoked his firearms license. She said the store remains open selling ammunition and other items that aren't firearms while LaGuercia appeals the revocation.
"They just came in the store after Sandy Hook, raided the store and took away the license,"

Announcing the Ron Paul Homeschool Curriculum

The Ron Paul Curriculum

A Curriculum That Students Teach Each Other

Ron Paul

This site will open on April 6, 2013

A student who goes through this curriculum, kindergarten through high school, will have a mastery of the foundations of liberty. There is no other curriculum on the Web to match it.

For students who hustle, they will enter college as juniors. They will quiz out of their first two years of college for about $2,500, total (today's money, of course). They will get into the work force as college graduates two years before their peers do.

The man who teaches the public speaking course in grade 9 and the literature courses for grades 6 through 8 graduated from an accredited college on his 18th birthday. He paid for his own college education by working part time in his own home business. It cost him under $15,000. It can be done. I recommend it.

If you are a parent, this should get your attention. I think students should be motivated.
I launched this site three months after my final day in Congress.

Under Congressional rules, I could not operate a business, even an educational one, while I was a member of Congress. So, I am catching up fast.

Today, you can enroll your child for $25. This will go to $250 a year on September 2, 2013. The $25 gives you and your child full access to this site until September 2. The student will be able to take Dr. Gary North's free course: high school preparation. It will cover study techniques, note-taking, speed reading, typing, leadership, public speaking, website creation, video production, screencast production. Even if you are long out of high school, you can still benefit from this course.

My suggestion: use the first name of your son or daughter, with the letter of your last name, e.g. chuckd or Sallyb. To enroll your child until September 2, click here.

On September 2, 2013, the tuition fee moves to $250. On that day, the following courses will be available: English: grades 6, 7, 8, 9, 10; history: grades 6, 7, 8, 10; math: grades 6, 7, 8, 9, 10; science: grades 6, 7, 8, 9, 10; public speaking; government; economics 1.

In addition to the yearly tuition fee, each course will cost $50. You can take them a la carte. This is how we pay our teachers.

When this curriculum is finished, which I hope will be in December 2015, it will be kindergarten through 12th grade.

The courses from kindergarten through the 5th grade will be free. I want to help homeschool families get started.

Once families recognize the value of my program, K-5, I think 80% of them will sign up for the next seven years.

The curriculum is mostly self-taught. If a student gets stuck, he can get help from other students on the course Q&A forums. Older students serve as tutors for younger students. They learn by teaching, which is a great way to master any new field.

This curriculum teaches people how to write. The main teachers in the social sciences and humanities, Dr. Gary North and Dr. Tom Woods, are both successful writers. They are both successful businessmen. They will teach your children how to write effectively and fast.

What if you want to take a course? It will cost you $50. But if you have paid for one of your children to take it, it's free to you for the full year of the course.

Students will be taught the basics of video production, website design, and Internet marketing. A few of them will have profitable businesses by the time they are 16.

Again, to enroll your child until September 2, click here

Found in the Sands of Normandy: 69 Years Later, D-Day Veteran Recovers Item Lost on the Beaches

Via Daily Timewaster

Maybe my mind is gone, as my mother would say,:) but all I remember is that my dog tag had my name, religion and blood type.......?
Last September, Stéphane Lamache, director of the Airborne Museum of Sainte-Mère-Eglise, in Normandy, in northern France, was taking a walk on the dunes of Agon-Coutainville with friends. It was a cloudless day. A small piece of metal was sticking out from the surface of the sand.
The historian immediately recognized that it was a dog tag, the metal identification worn around the neck by American soldiers on D-day.
Thus writes Benoît Hopquin in a un article pour Le Monde from the beaches of Normandy (translated by Worldcrunch).
On it were engraved the soldier's name – James Kelson -- his blood type, religion, and next of kin: Elsie Kelson, as well as an address in Washington DC.

7-year-old faces 2 felony charges for shooting BB gun

He looks like a typical 7-year-old boy, but on Tuesday night, Sam Grant is facing charges that many adults never will.

He is charged with two felonies for something that happened when his mother turned her back for just a second. His parents told Eyewitness News that they're outraged.

"We are both just shocked. We have been in a state of shock over this," said Ray Robbins.

Sam's parents said this scenario began in February when Sam was playing outside with his BB
gun. They said he began shooting at an abandoned house right across the street, but instead, Sam shot two cars as they were passing by.

"State Control": What the UN Firearms Treaty is All About

Via WRSA

White House mouthpiece Jay Carney says that the Obama administration will “conduct a thorough review” of the UN’s newly enacted gun control pact “to determine whether to sign the treaty.” The suspense is hardly unbearable, given that the UN treaty would codify the proposition that national governments should have a monopoly on weapons.

The announced objective of the treaty is to regulate the sale and transfer of small arms and light weapons, a category that includes all civilian-owned firearms. According to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, the treaty “will help to keep warlords, pirates, terrorists, criminals and their like from acquiring deadly arms.”
Well, actually, it would not. Nothing in the dense and nearly unreadable text of the 15-page treaty will prevent member states from arming terrorists and criminals. Article 2, Section 3 specifies that nothing in the treaty will “apply to the international movement of conventional arms by, or on behalf of, a State Party for its use provided that the conventional arms remain under that State Party’s ownership.”

Article 11, which deals with “Diversion” of weaponry, requires that parties to the treaty work to “mitigate the risk” that weapons would fall into the hands of criminals or terrorists, and that they “share relevant information … on effective measures to address diversion.” But nothing in the language forbids such diversions from States to “non-state actors” – a point that was made, ironically, by the Communist government of North Korea when it opposed the treaty.
