Commemorating the Birth of the Confederate Battle Flag

 *152 years later, the Virginia Flaggers marked the occasion of the birth of the Confederate Battle Flag, THE SOLDIERS' FLAG, by displaying the 15x15 ANV Battle Flag that will be raised September 28th at the RVA I-95 Flag Site, on the steps of the Virginia State Capitol.

Surely this must have ruined the Useful Fools night. :)

*"When the Confederate Army of the Shenandoah, under Joseph E. Johnston, and the Confederate Army of the Potomac, under Pierre G. T. Beauregard, met Union forces at the First Battle of Manassas on July 21, 1861, their troops flew an assortment of flags, both state and national. (States' rights was a founding principle of the Confederacy and influenced the attachment many units had to their state flags. Some Virginia and North Carolina soldiers refused to fly anything but their state flags.) The Stars and Bars' resemblance to the U.S. flag, combined with similarities between the two sides' uniforms and the general confusion of battle, contributed to an incident at First Manassas in which Confederate forces fired on a Confederate infantry brigade commanded by Jubal A. Early. Shortly after, Johnston and Beauregard resolved to establish a new, sufficiently distinctive flag for their troops, and they consulted one of Beauregard's aides, the same William Miles who had opposed the original flag in the first place.

Miles resurrected what had been his preference for the national flag, a design of his own that featured a blue saltire, or X shape, with a white border and white stars (again, one for each state) on a field of red. The Committee on the Flag and Seal had rejected it the first time, suggesting that it looked "like a pair of suspenders," and now the members rejected it again. Johnston and Beauregard decided to use it anyway, with Beauregard proposing to Johnston two Confederate flags: "a peace or parade flag, and a war flag to be used only on the field of battle." This second flag, the so-called battle flag, would be the one Miles designed, and the two generals and their lieutenants met at Fairfax Court House in September 1861 to work out the details. At Johnston's urging, a square design was adopted, and each branch of the army was assigned a different size: forty-eight inches square for infantry, thirty-six inches square for artillery, and thirty inches square for cavalry."

Almost everyone knows about all of Bob Hope’s trips to Vietnam. He would do his annual Christmas Shows for TV, which were recorded live at some of the safest bases in Vietnam, while surrounded by TV cameras, reporters and lots of tanks and protective armed troops. I was at his Christmas Day show back in 1966, just north of Saigon. I enjoyed it very much. It was one of a few good memories that I have of my Tour of Duty. But, meeting Martha Raye – better known to the troops, as Colonel Maggie – was the highlight event of the year for me.

Ted Cruz staffer told: 'May your children die'

 

When a speechwriter for Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, took to Twitter to tout her boss’ recent work, a California Democrat Party official blasted back, wishing death and “debilitating diseases” upon her children.

Amanda Carpenter, a speechwriter and senior communications adviser to Cruz, tweeted out Friday morning, “GOP beat gun control, changed Obama’s mind on Syria, is holding the line on amnesty. We can defund Obamacare, too!”

But Allan Brauer, who works as the communications chair for the Democratic Party of Sacramento County in California, fired back a shocking reply, “@amandacarpenter May your children all die from debilitating, painful and incurable diseases.”

It wasn’t the first time, however, that Brauer, a longtime activist in the homosexuality movement who co-chaired the University of Chicago’s Lesbian/Gay Student Organization in the 1970s, has used Twitter as an outlet for scathing, personal attacks.

In an lengthy feud with a self-proclaimed tea partier using the Twitter handle @SooperMexican, Brauer has made several crude and even racially charged comments.

Southern women seem more comfortable battling for Dixie in politics

Americans are a fiesty bunch. If you try to squash their spirit with regulations or tie the hands of their groups you might find they will revert to the tactics of the colonialists when the British marched to seize guns in Massachusetts. There is a spirit in the South and it is rising. The more today's government attempts to bridle our freedom, the more you see individuals resisting. And surprisingly women are proving to be the most active and most effective leaders.

This Christmas travelers driving on Interstate 95 south of Richmond may find themselves looking at a large Confederate battle flag waving in the breeze welcoming all to the South. A group known as the "Virginia Flaggers" is working to install a large flag pole on privately owned property in the vicinity of the Interstate. It's just one more front in the battle for Richmond.

Over the past several years there has been a continuing effort to "PC" the Confederate White House and other Confederate structures in Richmond. The Confederate battle flag, the red field with the blue St. Andrews Cross and white stars has been removed and replaced by the less well recognized Stars and Bars. And the Musuem of the Confederacy's long term fate has been in question as its director and others seem to be working towards it's removal from its present location.

This anti Southern activity has spurred local activists to "push back," as Rush Limbaugh would say. In this case, it's a woman named Susan Hathaway. When she realized that southern heritage organizations like the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the United Daughters of the Confederacy were often timid in taking action to stand up for the South, Susan and a small band took the line.

Their strategy was simple.

$20,000 reward offered for info on ‘persons of interest' in Rite Aid murder

 With a $20,000 reward posted for information, the search continued Friday night for two “persons of interest” in the fatal shooting of a West End pharmacy manager, city police Commissioner Joseph Bail Jr. said. 

Police were dispatched to the Rite Aid Pharmacy at 2722 block of W. Ninth St., at Highland Avenue, for a shooting at 9:53 p.m. Thursday. Officers found manager Jason Scott McClay lying in a rear shopping aisle with a fatal gunshot wound. 

He was pronounced at the scene by paramedic Tim Kaiser.

Robber unintentionally shoots, kills accomplice outside Tulsa motel

 

Tulsa Police have taken 32-year-old Elbert Hendrickson into custody for his part in the robbery at the Georgetown Motel at 8502 East 27th Street on Thursday.

Investigators tell KRMG that Hendrickson unintentionally shot his accomplice, 35-year old Aaron Warner, who died later at a Tulsa hospital.

Police tell us Hendrickson's gunfire struck Warner who was fighting with the robbery victim outside of the motel.

GOP Plans Multiple Resolutions Defunding Obamacare

As House Republicans take the first step Friday to fund the government without funding Obamacare, GOP lawmakers spelled out their strategy when the Democratic-controlled Senate refuses to go along, as it surely will.

The Republican-controlled House, they said, will keep passing the original resolution with "everything-but-Obamacare" funding and then send to the Senate separate bills to fund the military and other key programs if the Senate strips out "defunding" language.

"We're willing to do every other program — everything — except Obamacare," Republican Rep. Tom McClintock of California told Newsmax. "Nobody is pressing for, or even hoping for, a shutdown. In fact, it's exactly the opposite."

Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, a leader of the Republican effort, said in conference call with reporters that if there is a shutdown, the public will realize that "Harry Reid and Barack Obama are the only political actors keeping the government shut down."

"If Harry Reid thinks Obamacare is so important that he is willing to shut down the government, then we will be standing firm," Cruz said.

"It will take 60 votes [to pass a Senate resolution with Obamacare funding] and [Utah Republican Sen.] Mike Lee and I will be using any means we can to make sure Republicans stand side-by-side to stop this," Cruz said.

Peggy Noonan: WH Staffers Nickname President 'Obam-me'

 

White House staffers have adopted a new and unflattering nickname for their boss:"Obam-me," Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan says she heard in chats with a few senators.

And how did the staffers come up with that name?

"Because it's all about him and his big thoughts," Noonan writes in a column. "I guess the second-term team is not quite as adoring as the first."

Obama's DHS seizing local power

 

The Department of Homeland Security under President Obama is demonstrating troubling signs the agency is shifting the balance of power away from local and state municipalities toward a centralized federal authority, charges a recently released book.

In “Impeachable Offenses: The Case to Remove Barack Obama from Office,” New York Times bestselling authors Aaron Klein and Brenda J. Elliott document the DHS has likely violated the Posse Comitatus Act.

The law expressly forbids direct participation by the military in a “search, seizure, arrest, or other similar activity.”

The authors further cite evidence the DHS is building a de facto domestic military, with the purchase of military-grade equipment and the execution of military-style training exercises.
