Detained for “Wrong-Think”: Canadian Border Guards Seize Books from Monika Schaefer

Upon returning from the United States of America on 24 April 2019, I was detained by the Canadian Border Guards in the Calgary airport for three hours.

Three Border Guards spent those hours perusing through my possessions, especially the books that I was carrying in my small suitcase. They were looking for “hate propaganda”.

The five books which they seized from me for further inspection are the following:

By this point in the war, the South Vietnamese had begun to run out of artillery and small arms ammunition, grenades, anti-tank weapons, and even basic necessities such as medical supplies and rations. (Infuriating)

Many American writers state that the ARVN had little cohesion by the end of April 1975, preferring to paint the capital in a state of disarray, giving very little agency to the South Vietnamese. However, the organizational situation in the Delta calls this portrayal into question.

In contrast to the hectic situation in and around Saigon, the situation in the Mekong Delta was substantially different.

Sins and Virtues of “Civil War” History

History is remembered as a narrative, not facts and figures. If the story is told from the viewpoint of past sins, the rendering condemns our ancestors and makes us ashamed of our legacy. If it is told from the viewpoint of ancestral virtues, it leaves us proud of our tradition and inspired to build upon the accomplishments of those who came before us.

Thus, if Civil War history is told from the perspective of slavery, white Southerners are portrayed as America’s evil twin and Confederate statues are torn down. But when the virtues of the Confederate soldier were considered, the narrative inspired—and can continue to inspire—future generations of all Americans.

Consider, for example, General Robert E. Lee.

CONFEDERATE MEMORIAL DAY ADDRESS  22 April 2019

American by birth — Southern by the grace of God!  I come from a true Southern state, South Dakota, and I am honored to be probably the first Dakotan to give the Memorial Day address at the capital of the Confederacy.

Last week I had a conference call with a man from Michigan, another from Massachusetts, and another from Connecticut.  I told them I couldn’t do a follow-up call Monday because of Confederate Memorial Day.  When they asked what I was talking about I asked, “Don’t y’all celebrate Confederate Memorial Day in New England?   You should!  We celebrate Yankee Memorial Day in Alabama!”
