1. "The noblest American who ever lived and one of the greatest commanders known in the annals of war."
Winston Churchill.
2. "A nation of men of Lee's caliber would be unconquerable in spirit and soul. Indeed, to the degree that present-day American youth will strive to emulate his rare qualities, including his devotion to this land as revealed in his painstaking efforts to help heal the nation's wounds once the bitter struggle was over, we in our own time of danger in a divided world will be strengthened and our love of freedom sustained."
Dwight Eisenhower
3. The world has never seen better soldiers than those who followed Lee; and their leader will undoubtedly rank as without exception the very greatest of all the great captains that the English-speaking peoples have brought forth."
Theodore Roosevelt
4. "If any American father were asked which of our great men he would most want his own son to resemble, the father, if he were wise, would be compelled to answer, 'Robert E. Lee.'"
Benjamin Andrews, President Brown University, 1880.

Brock could you recommend a book about Robert E. Lee. Perhaps it's time to learn something about the man my great, great grandfather, Robert Lee McNeelan was named after.

There are many, but these three are hard to beat: Lee, Douglas Southhall Freeman, Lee, The Last Years Charles Brackelen Flood and The Lee Girls, Mary P. Coulling.
DeleteThanks Brock, I'm starting with The Lee Girls, I just ordered it.

You'll love it. They had many suitors, but the reason they say that none married was that they compared each one to their father and they didn't meet their standards. The youngest and prettiest died during the War in NC.
DeleteI'm sure I will. I'll get the other two books also, but I had to spring for Max Velocity's book too and my budget was already squealing like a stuck pig. ;)
ReplyDelete:) Persevere!
DeleteThanks for the tip, Mr. Townsend - just downloaded 'The Lee Girls'

DeleteOne of many proud Statesmen from the South!
ReplyDeleteIndeed.
DeleteGeneral Lee wasn't just a magnificent soldier and great commander. He was also a good man. That can't be said about many great generals. Someone we can all aspire to be like.
ReplyDeleteIndeed. A few of my favorites below.
Delete8. "The commanding general considers that no greater disgrace could befall the army, and through it our whole people, than the perpetration of the barbarous outrages upon the unarmed and defenceless and the wanton destruction of private property, that have marked the course of the enemy in our own country...
It must be remembered that we make war only upon armed men, and that we cannot take vengeance for the wrongs our people have suffered without lowering ourselves in the eyes of all whose abhorrence has been excited by the atrocities of our enemies, and offending against Him to whom vengeance belongeth, without whose favour and support our efforts must all prove in vain."
9. "We have but one rule here, and it is that every student must be a gentleman."

A true man of honor feels humbled himself when he cannot help humbling others.
Robert E. Lee
Duty is the most sublime word in our language. Do your duty in all things. You cannot do more. You should never wish to do less.
Robert E. Lee
My chief concern is to try to be an humble, earnest Christian.
Robert E. Lee
Never do a wrong thing to make a friend or to keep one.
Robert E. Lee
The trite saying that honesty is the best policy has met with the just criticism that honesty is not policy. The real honest man is honest from conviction of what is right, not from policy.
Robert E. Lee
The forbearing use of power does not only form a touchstone, but the manner in which an individual enjoys certain advantages over others is a test of a true gentleman.
The power which the strong have over the weak, the employer over the employed, the educated over the unlettered, the experienced over the confiding, even the clever over the silly—the forbearing or inoffensive use of all this power or authority, or a total abstinence from it when the case admits it, will show the gentleman in a plain light.
The gentleman does not needlessly and unnecessarily remind an offender of a wrong he may have committed against him. He cannot only forgive, he can forget; and he strives for that nobleness of self and mildness of character which impart sufficient strength to let the past be but the past.
A true man of Honor feels humble himself when he cannot help humbling others.
