My brother-in-law is one of those men who knows how to work. Been in the heavy construction business for years. 3 years ago, some newbie was on a crane and hit a high power wire. The operator was killed. My BOL was standing next to crane. His partner was leaning against the crane. BOL knocked partner away from the crane and was electrocuted when doing so. Those 2 survived but were a mess of burns externally and internally. My BOL suffers on a few occasions now from seizures because his brain was re-wired. The company took him back, then laid him of, took him back, laid him off, took him back ... and then finally let him go permanently. No one will hire him. At an unemployment rate here going into 19 percent (not including those dropped off the EDD role), he can't find a job. He has a wife and 2 small children. After being out of work for a year, he finally went to apply for food stamps. Said it was the most humiliating thing in his life. He said the worst part was him and his wife standing in line standing out looking like match sticks amongst a bunch of mostly woman and their illegitimate kids hanging all over the place and wailing and a few of their pimps. I don't blame my BOL and SOL and others in their position for applying for food stamps. What I do hate, is those people who have been on food stamps year after year, generation after generation. Cranking out one bastard child after another to increase their "benefits". I see them day after day walking up and down my street in packs walking to the corner mart buying candy, snacks, and beer with their EBT cards. I don't mind giving my neighbor a helping hand, either personally or through "benefits". But when it becomes nothing more than a way of life ... it's time to say sorry Charlie.
When my father was a country doctor in Virginia there was a law that required women to be sterilized if they had so many children and were receiving state help. Good to go for me. As far as jobs, I realize that sometimes you can't have what you wish, but for instance, if I needed a job now, I would jump in a cab. You can always make money if you hustle. My Vietnamese friend who followed us to Tarboro worked at the McDonald's there until a country store came up for sale. He didn't like it, but it was better than nothing. Laziness comes in all colors too. I remember we had a white tramp in town where I grew up (Marshal, VA - Salem during the War) who slept in a pear tree and begged for money. One day he came to the backdoor and asked my mother for some and this was in the early fifties when .50 cents was a big deal. My mother said "McCormick, go pick up that piece of paper over there, put it in the trash can and I'll give you 50 cents." He said no Ma'am and walked away. You can't make up stuff like that.
The kid across the street from me has been trying to get any job, including McD's for a year. No go. He's 17. And he is a good kid. I pay him to do some yard work on occasion. No one is going to hire my BOL to do Mc.D work if those jobs were begging for employee's. As for me, I have hit every auto shop here at least twice, some 3 times ... including all the hardware stores and LP and construction jobs ... and the construction jobs are almost non-existent. I have had one interview in 5 months competing with all the other unemployed mechanics. I know of one mechanic who has been out of work for over a year now. He goes to all the shops and begs for metal scraps to cash in. I know another mechanic who was out of work for about 2 years, he finally got another job 6 months ago. In between job searching, I do some side work either at my house or theirs. There was a job opening for 1 AP guy recently ... 1,500 people showed up for that job ... many from down the hill. If I had gone to school to be a nurse or a doctor, I'd have a job tomorrow here. I didn't. We have about 2 taxi services here run out of their homes. About a total of 7-8 cars. No one can afford taking a taxi anymore.
