  2. Having spent quite a bit of time in South Korea and some in Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia back in the 90's on business that took me into the industrial areas and some rural areas outside the larger cities it was an eye opener for me. Lack of industrial regulations and what I would consider outright dangerous practices in some areas. A brothel in the middle of an industrial area that I passed as I walked to a store to buy a coke when I took a break with several young ladies displaying their wares in the two large windows on either side of the entrance. A different world for sure with the impression of freedom but add to that the entire down town area of Seoul lined on both sides of the street with military vehicles and troops with dogs and automatic weapons on every corner with others walking in between the corners because of a scheduled union/student protest and you realize the facade of freedom carries the threat of tyranny at a moments notice. Singapore is probably one of the safest cities on earth but only because if you step out of line you get crushed under the boot of their law and order.

  3. I was walking through the center of Singapore and saw three police officers with long night sticks chase down a man and beat him. I asked the people I was with what he had done and it appeared he had jay walked. Either crossing in an area not designated to cross in or just when the light did not indicate you could walk. I made sure I walked a tight line when I was in Singapore for sure.

  4. :) Heh! I certainly realize the detriments, but would have no problem living, say in Vietnam.
