An unnamed, off-duty officer has killed the father of a little girl he crashed into late Saturday night.

Authorities say that Taniyah Middleton, 4, was crossing First Avenue in the Maywood section of Chicago with her older cousin when the officer approached on his motorcycle.

He didn't see the girl until it was too late, so he threw himself off the bike - which went skidding into the little girl.

Christopher Middleton, 26, heard the accident and came rushing out and allegedly attacked the man who did it. He was shot and killed by the officer.

According to the police report, Taniyah Middleton rushed out into the road in front of the officer, not giving him enough time to stop his vehicle.

He tried to avoid her, throwing himself off the bike, but the machine flew straight into the little girl.

Hearing the commotion, father Christopher Middleton, 26, ran out to see what had happened.

'Her face was skinned,' Darrell Davis, Mr Middleton's uncle, said to ABC.

'Of course a father would be upset at the initial reaction of seeing the child in this condition and he confronted the guy and they got into a confrontation.'

Mr Middleton faced with a weeping daughter, flesh ripped off her face, flew into a rage, attacking the man who hurt his little girl.

He and John Passley, 18, Taniyah's cousin, both allegedly jumped onto the man, who they say never identified himself as a police officer.

Police say Mr Middleton struck the officer, a 43-year-old, eight-year veteran of the force, in the face and knocked him to the ground.

The two pummeled him until he was nearly 'unconscious,' Fraternal Order of Police Spokesman Pat Camden said.

  1. I would be the last person to defend an LEO using unreasonable force, BUT this article is so slanted that it irks me.

Lets see if we can figure this out...

A 4 year old is playing outside an night near traffic, runs out in the road (or steps out) and gets hit by a motorcycle (just so happens it was a cop,but it could have been a college kid or guy coming home from work or anyone)
The child's Dad freaks out and ATTACKS ( not confronts) with the help of a an 18 year old.

Together they beat the man down to the pavement (witness says the father was on top of him). Anyone else would probably have been beaten to death, but since the cop is armed he defends himself and kills one of his attackers? And the news stations go wild (wanna bet the cop was a Caucasian?) calling for his crucifixion.

Sorry, I feel for the little girl, but the bottom line is if two guys attack me (even after an ACCIDENT) I am going to put them both down, period.

The fact that he was an off duty cop has nothing to do with the event (other than allowing him to defend himself with a firearm, when 99% of Chicago's population could not)

This is one case where I can not fault the cop.
    Just my 2 cents.

  2. Doesn't sound like the accident happened through the cop's negligence...maybe the girl's family, though.

If the cop was drunk and show-boating on the bike and he lost control, I could understand Dad wanting to beat his arse.

Hell...the cop laid the bike down, at risk to himself, to avoid the girl.

    Good shoot. Cop did fine.

  3. Man - lots of mixed feelings here...

    (1) The fact he was a cop is irrelevant - except... I'll cover this below...
    (2) "He didn't ID himself as a cop" -- He was off-duty, making this irrelevant unless the survivor is somehow charged with "assaulting an only-one" which wouldn't make sense to me. Off-duty they're just people like the rest of us! Except...
    (3) This being chi(t)cago, anyone EXCEPT an only-one would be beaten to death by these thugs as they're prohibited from even OWNING - much less carrying - a pistol!
    (4) This is why the surviving thug and his thug-family are upset about the only-one not IDing himself - "If we'd known he was a cop we'd have known he had a pistol and we wouldn't have beat his @$$ so K'Raven would still be alive!" Somehow, in their "entitled" (what passes for a) mind, this makes it all the cop's fault... Sadly, they'd likely have little trouble finding a jury of their (ahem) "peers" that would agree!
    (5) Part of me is sad that thug#2 didn't catch a fatal dose of high-velocity-lead-poisoning too. Another part is sad the only-one didn't get beaten to death - not because he did anything wrong (AFAIK, he didn't), and not because I hate cops (I don't) but because it's wrong-Wrong-WRONG that "only-ones" are the only-ones permitted the means of self-defense in chi(t)cago!!

Maybe if they had to check their pistols at the end of their shift like the Brit-cops (and others) do, they'd support the CITIZENS WHO ALSO WANT TO BE ABLE TO PREVENT THEMSELVES FROM BEING BEATEN TO DEATH BY VIOLENT THUGS!!

You can guaran-damn-tee that if the only way the only-ones got to carry was to pass a bill allowing *ALL* law-abiding citizens to do so, that bill would be passed in RECORD time!

Ergo, Ultimately, I guess I'm sorta sad that all three of them aren't dead.

  4. As always, excellent.

    Good point.
