Congressman challenges USDA to follow own school lunch restrictions

Kansas Republican Tim Huelskamp issued a challenge to the U.S. Department of Agriculture on Tuesday: Adopt the same calorie restrictions and menu standards in the department’s cafeterias as the USDA now requires in the nation’s public schools.

While students pick at their vegetables, USDA’s cafeteria menus are loaded with unhealthy options for government employees — from pesto chicken pizza to BLTs with cheddar cheese, Cuban pork paninis to Philly steak subs, cheeseburgers to French toast.

“If the USDA demands that 100,000 school districts change their menus and justifies this mandate because schools receive federal money for lunches, then taxpayers should demand that the USDA cafeteria meet the same standards, as USDA operates in taxpayer-funded buildings,” Huelskamp challenged Tuesday afternoon. “Let’s see if they eat enough to function. Let’s see if they like having choices taken away from them.”

    My first thought was that maybe feeding govt employees unhealthy food might not be such a bad idea. :)
    And a Cuban pork panIni is called a medianoche, or midnight sandwich. And I LOVE them.

      Is that by any chance on French bread? The Vietnamese make the best ones also, with all kind of goodies, meas, cucumbers, hot peppers, etcetera.

    Cuban bread. Similar but different. There is even a difference between Miami and Tampa Cuban bread. I don't remember the difference from French bread.
    The grand daughter's other grandfather made the best before he retired. He had a grocery store and made his own for sale in the store. The name of the grocery store was (in English) The Golden Rooster. Guess what his hobby was... El Gueyo del Oro (I spelled it wrong, but my Spanish sucks and I am too lazy to go look it up right now).

      I got to come and visit! Dixie and I go to Miami for a wedding in February. I forgot where you live, though.

    We are two hours north of Miami. Plan to stop by and stay a day or two. Or we could meet in Miami. Oldest son lives there.
    Or both.
    If you stay over here I can only assume the picture on NBF in the guest room is OK.
    When in Feb and I will mark the dates.
