In a move clearly intended by the Obama Administration to suppress the acquisition, ownership and use of AR-15s and other .223 caliber general purpose rifles, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives unexpectedly announced today that it intends to ban commonplace M855 ball ammunition as “armor piercing ammunition.” The decision continues Obama’s use of his executive authority to impose gun control restrictions and bypass Congress.

It isn’t even the third week of February, and the BATFE has already taken three major executive actions on gun control. First, it was a major change to what activities constitute regulated “manufacturing” of firearms. Next, BATFE reversed a less than year old position on firing a shouldered “pistol.” Now, BATFE has released a “Framework for Determining Whether Certain Projectiles are ‘Primarily Intended for Sporting Purposes’ Within the Meaning of 18 U.S.C. 921(a)(17)(c)”, which would eliminate M855’s exemption to the armor piercing ammunition prohibition and make future exemptions nearly impossible.

  1. War by Monday?
    I think not.
Cable TV is hot, the weather is cold, and all
is too comfortable to be disturbed.

    1. Actually, I WAS surprised. Surprised that they waited this long, that is. Within the last 12 months, they've outlawed the 7N6 variant of 5.45 and the silvertip version of 7.62x54R Russian calibers.

M855 was merely next on the list, that's all.

    2. You know, they actually remind me of children playing in their sandbox.

When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things.

  3. As I've mentioned before, I'm not surprised by anything these days.

    2. From putting 2 and 2 together this morning I think all the green tip stuff is the M855 stuff.
Mine is labeled LAP - light armor piercing but nowhere does it say M855.
Also, all I have is 62 grain. All the M855 stuff is only 62 grain so - I guess that's what I have.
I'm going to hit Gander this morning and see what they have on the shelves. They've been stocked chock full, but we'll see what a week or lead up panic buying has done...

  5. They still don't understand just who could become the largest supplier of both the m855 and ss109. If they keep pushing, they might find the answer.

  6. I just bought some Lake City with an LC 14 headstamp that is supposed to be
"greentip". I bought it on a whim from Natchez because it was a deal. I think
it was week before last. less than 25 cents a round including shipping.

Today I can't find any62 grain ball 5.56 anywhere online. Everyone is showing it as out of stock or unavailable. Damn, I wished I had bought more! CH
