Quote of the Day: Rule of Law edition

From the inestimable Kevin Williamson:
When the law does not apply to the lawmakers and law-enforcers, you are not being governed: You are being ruled. And we are ruled by criminals. If you treat IRS rules the way the IRS treats IRS rules, you go to prison; if you treat federal law the way the secretary of state does, you go to prison. If you treat immigration controls the way our immigration authorities do, you go to prison. If you’re as careless in your handling of firearms as the ATF is, you go to prison. You cook your business’s books the way the federal government cooks its books, you go to prison.
If you believe that any of those who you’ve watched arrogantly refuse to follow the law are going to actually be prosecuted and pay the same penalty you would, you’ve not been paying close attention.  When’s the last time you saw any politician or bureaucrat with any real power frog marched off to jail? When is the last time you actually saw one held accountable for their actions?

All of Williamson’s statements are true when applied to you and I.  I’ve always used the example of a numbers racket.  You run a numbers racket and you go to jail.  The government runs one and they call it “the lottery” – and, of course, it’s proceeds are “for the children” – so its ok if they do it.

 THE FEDERALIST NO 57

by James Madison

I will add, as a fifth circumstance in the situation of the House of Representatives, restraining them from oppressive measures, that they can make no law which will not have its full operation on themselves and their friends, as well as on the great mass of the society. This has always been deemed one of the strongest bonds by which human policy can connect the rulers and the people together. It creates between them that communion of interests and sympathy of sentiments, of which few governments have furnished examples; but without which every government degenerates into tyranny. If it be asked, what is to restrain the House of Representatives from making legal discriminations in favor of themselves and a particular class of the society? I answer: the genius of the whole system; the nature of just and constitutional laws; and above all, the vigilant and manly spirit which actuates the people of America- a spirit which nourishes freedom, and in return is nourished by it.

If this spirit shall ever be so far debased as to tolerate a law not obligatory on the legislature, as well as on the people, the people will be prepared to tolerate any thing but liberty.

  1. Speaking of being ruled by criminals, not that it makes a difference or changes
anything in the grand scheme of crisis in our Republic.
However, the supposed "debt ceiling" is reached again this Sunday.
As of this morning, the house and senate mentioned not a word
or debated any bill this past week. Moreover, the house was not in session
for most of the week, and the senate is still babbling about human trafficking.
Just this morning, Droopy Dog was on cnn panting about how that bill is
still primary, and after that is completed
the Lynch nomination will be the immediate and primary work of
    the GOP.
Not surprisingly, he made no mention of debt or the ceiling it resides under.
Most telling is that the pandering whores of state media, regurgitation and teleprompter parroting have not mentioned or spoken a single word of this
    as of this morning.
Stand by, there is a quick and dirty "FUCK YOU"
passage of an unlimited blank check (without restrictions)
bill to raise the debt coming under cover of darkness.
Moreover, if that falls through in the short term (intentionally?),
Without question, it will be quickly used to again bird flip and shit
on veteran's and the military at our monuments and memorials.
    So be it.
If that happens, this time I will have to represent in the
    AO of DC.
Once more unto the barrycades, dear friends, once more.

Perhaps the most infuriating of all.

  3. I was listening to the documentary on the Iran Contra debauchment called
The Mena Connection. From what I could tell from listening while working,
not one significant person was charged in this dog and pony show. The Fed
gov was into it up to their throats and the top dog becomes president of the US.
The communist magazine, Time, helped the crooks which basically ended the
investigation. These are some of the lowest scum on Earth, yet look at them.
