This is one of the few articles in this series where I haven’t yet reviewed the product, but I plan to follow it up with a review in the future because I bought one. My intention in posting this today is to give the regular readers of this column a official heads up on a heavily discounted and apparently high quality product that may be a priority for you in your prepping supplies.

I bought one of these used at an auction in Indiana. It doesn't have the warming unit above the firebox but otherwise looks the same. It burns wood or coal and was made by Montgomery Ward. I don't think it was used long as it is in pretty good shape but you do need a herd of Sumo wrestlers to move it...hard to guess how many hundreds of pounds of cast iron make up the firebox and hot water storage area. It does remind me of my grandmothers old cookstove before she went to propane gas in the late 50's. My could that women cook and I am grateful she taught my mother to cook just as well.

Delete:) ! I am sure.
Grew up with one like that! My Dad used to cook pancakes on the round iron covers every Sunday. Wish I had that old stove now....

DeleteI remember that and I don't guess you know what became of it.
Once you've cooked on one you never want to go back. Check Lehman's to buy the real deal, but nothing like this price.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
DeleteI've got my Grandma's Monarch. Looks just like that. Turned down $600 for it. Used to load it with corn cobs. I can remember her canning on it. 60+ years ago.

DeleteGood man!
Watchful
ReplyDeleteYou can get one without the upper at the (NC) Bragg Blvd Flea market for about $450.00.
Needs cleaning and bricks, but is complete with all feet.
