The United States shouldn't continue to carry the burden of taking in refugees from the Middle East, U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., said Thursday. The senator's comments came as President Barack Obama said the U.S. is preparing to take in at least 10,000 Syrian refugees fleeing the war-torn country.
"Middle Eastern nations should assume the
primary task of absorbing this wave of refugees. Our guiding principle
should be to help assist in the placement of refugees as close to their
homes as possible, and to take such action as we are able to aid their
return home in a stable situation. This strategy will not only reduce
the numbers making dangerous treks, but will create more impetus for
political reforms in the region," Sessions, who chairs the Senate
Subcommittee on Immigration and the National Interest, said in a
statement.
