Teachers Should Allow Ebonics Because English Grammar Is Too Hard For Minorities To Learn

Via Billy

An undergraduate researcher at the University of Wisconsin–Madison has gained national acclaim for her research showing, she says, that members of minority groups feel oppressed by standard, grammatical English.

The researcher is Erika Gallagher, reports The Daily Cardinal, the student newspaper on the taxpayer-funded campus.

Gallagher’s research was chosen to be presented at the Collegiate Conference on Composition and Communication in Portland, Oregon earlier this semester.

  1. To me, this sounds like a recommendation that we should change the grammar of American English -- and make it much harder. Next, a federal law making American English the one and only official language of the U.S. Finally, a federal law that requires all migrants to be proficient in American English before being allowed to enter the United States.

It might have no effect on the torrent of immigrants that threatens to drown us...but then again, it might.

  2. When my youngest daughter was in elementary school "free form" writing was encouraged. In "free form" thoughts were important, grammar and spelling were not. It was a bad idea. What she wrote was nearly unintelligible. Grammar, punctuation and spelling are fundamental building blocks of language. Just because some people are too lazy or too stupid to learn the fundamentals doesn't mean the standards should be lowered. In order for the US to remain a dominate country standards must be enforced and in some cases raised. Should we strive to be the best or succumb to mediocrity?

  3. Language is a barrier to success. The solution should be to improve your language skills to overcome the barrier, not just call the barrier racist.

      Agreed.

    2. But I agree with the premise that language is a barrier. When I hear someone use lack of subject -verb agreement, I know that person is illiterate and I no longer care what they have to say about anything. Especially if English is your only language. I am much more forgiving for people who speak multiple languages.

  4. Liberal racism at its best on display. Blacks are just too stupid to learn like whites. That is exactly what every liberal thinks. Blacks need our help, because they are inferior and cannot make it without liberal help.

      Evidently.

  5. Hindering language hinders communication and thought.

Our language is in need of enforcement. Too often bad alternative definitions are adopted, leading to ambiguity and fuzzy thinking.
