A New York Copperhead's Senior Essay on his History of Defiance T-shirt Worn to School

Hey Brock... My son Christian wore his History of Defiance shirt to high school (he is a senior) the other day and "only got called a racist" seven times, a record by his count. His English teacher asked why he wore a , I believe she said "symbol of hate" to school, to which he replied it's history, not hate, or something along those lines. Long story short, she told him if he wrote an essay about it he could get extra credit. I told him he should e-mail you for a few pointers, but apparently he chose not to. If you would like to contact him about this still unfolding "lesson" he is at...........  . He does follow your blog and I know he was looking on it for material for his essay.

  1. This is a young man who is on his way to greater things. I hope that he plans on college, with a major in political studies, and pre law. We need men of courage in our congress such as him, to lead our next generation into the future, and a better way for this country that understands that the constitution is a document written in stone and soaked with the blood of patriots. Well spoken, young man, well spoken, indeed.

      Absolutely.

  2. Frankly I see nothing wrong with slavery. However there are rules about slaves. This is all very clear in the Bible. The Old and New Testament. The War on the South was a war against the Bible.

    1. Slavery is difficult to justify today due to our technology (productivity). In the past there had to be division of labour. So, whether you had slavery or serfdom or whatever you call Chinese labourers (who didn't seem very free), that's just how society was.

Today we can enjoy more freedom and equality. I'm not saying I want standard socialist "equality". I just mean, today we have machines. Machines are our slaves.

  3. However there are rules about how to treat slaves. There were places where laves were not treated well and for those places it is good that slavery was abolished. But not the American South.

  4. The actual rules involved with how to treat slaves I think are in scattered places. I think a lot are in tracatate Kidushin. In any case, keeping the USA together I think could have been done by president Trump if he had only been around then.

      Through negotiation I assume.

    2. That is what I meant. He would have found a way to reconcile both the North and South without war.

  5. Brock would be the one to ask :)

Might be best he didn't take the stand though. Depends on what career he's wanting.

You only get to be a slick big dog if you remain a blank slate who takes no positions.

  6. What usually works for me is the argument that man is fallen, no human society perfect.

Slavery was never popular, just worked very well economically. Today we have big business which isn't popular, just works very well.

The North invaded the South; the South was not desiring to invade the North. And the South had simply adopted slavery that preexisted in the New World. Just as slavery ended elsewhere without invasion, it too would have ended here.

By freeing the slaves with force, racial relations were harmed more than necessary. A voluntary freeing would have led to better relations. And it would have given slaves time to adapt to freedom, to learn how to be free in a supportive environment rather than in a hostile one.

Cotton prices fell globally shortly after the war, so cotton would have ceasing being so profitable. Slavery likely would have ceased being so profitable.

Things change with time. War is Hell, and the outcome is uncertain.

And many in the North just wanted to deport blacks. Lincoln appeared to want this but was shot. Lincoln didn't free a single slave.

The US has changed dramatically as a result of the war. We're now a very centralised polity, and we have 800 bases around the world in 177 foreign polities. Nearly 200K troops stationed. That's empire. That's the result of the war.

Had America remained decentralised, it could never have managed such an empire. We've lost the checks and balances that previously existed.

I recommend not arguing this though.

A stand that would be worth taking for the child is to defend America First resistance to foreign wars. I did that in college. The idea isn't to defend WWII Germany of course. The idea is to argue how none of the wars turn out well, and they cost huge amounts. What you do is bypass WWII. WWII is part of America's current religion, and you don't mess with a person's religion.

      Agreed.

"......... the consolidation of the states into one vast republic, sure to be aggressive abroad and despotic at home, will be the certain precursor of that ruin which has overwhelmed all those that have preceded it.......The South has contended only for the supremacy of the Constitution, and the just administration of the laws made in pursuance to it."
