The Spanish government said Thursday it would begin the process to impose direct rule on Catalonia in an unprecedented move to crush the region's independence bid.
In a
statement from Madrid, the government of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy
said it would invoke Article 155 of the constitution, a provision that
allows the central government to suspend the autonomy of the Catalan
regional administration.
Rajoy's
Cabinet will meet on Saturday to agree measures to "restore the
constitutional order" in Catalonia, where a banned referendum on
independence took place earlier this month. The plan will then be put
before the Senate, where Rajoy's Popular Party has a majority, for
approval.

The Brits did the same thing with Scotland a few years ago. It's a "bone" tossed to keep the independence seeking peasants happy.

DeleteThe Catalans separatists are organizing an unexpected counter-revolutionary. They are calling for their supporters to go to the banks tomorrow and withdraw all of their money. Depending how many answer the call it could trigger a bank run and liquidity crisis for the Spanish central bank. Like almost all EU countries Spain is debt ridden and has serious problems selling it's bonds in the international market. A bank run and liquidity crisis will make it all but impossible. The Catalans will be able to tell the government in Madrid: If you want our money back in the system simply accede to our independence. Checkmate!

Anyway, Spain being pushed to the Right sounds fine to me. Say, "No!" to the EU and to immigration. If Spain keeps out angry Muslims while Catalonia converts to Islam, the rest of Spain will become much more popular for future investment capital.
Europe has gone crazy. If part of Spain can become right-wing enough to reject conversion to Islam, then I bet losing Catalonia is worthwhile.
Presumably this time of demographic crisis for the West will end someday...
