The RTO antennas sticking up in the air like that carry a message of "please shoot me". I always bent my antenna down and ran it through a loop on my ruck harness. When transmissions began to trail off then you raised the antenna up and when you got further out you attached the longer folding antenna if the bush allowed. You basically only took risk as required to keep contact with a toc or firebase.
Headed over in the middle of October on a boat. (Weigel spelling?) Went from Ft Campbell to Oakland/San Francisco and then to the Philippines and finally Cam Rahn Bay. Started in Phan Rang and then to Phan Thiet/Song Mao. Served with great troops still recall all the Catholic school kids in very neat school uniforms when I got into Phan Rang once.
