A few thoughts on our disastrous trillion-dollar military:
It is unnecessary. It does not defend the United States. The last time it did so was in 1945. The
United States has no military enemies. No nation has anything even
close to the forces necessary to invade America, and probably none the
desire. A fifth of the budget would suffince for any real needs.
Well said by Reed. In the mean time, our own country is
nakedly exposed to what ever comes along. Recall Katrina, not enough National Guard ( militia ) to go around - they were all shipped out to foreign countries. What a disaster. "A major component of this "fundamental change in military culture" has been the federalization of the National Guard for the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. This has stripped many states of Guard units and leaves states and communities without the trained military personnel, equipment, and first-responders they would need in the event of natural disaster or severe terrorist attack." America comes in last.

I have never understood why the NG was sent to Vietnam. The National Guard should only be used within CONUS ++.
