EXCLUSIVE Video Interview: Idaho Sheriff Responds to N.Y. Times, Media, Critics Over His Virus vs. Liberty Appeal

Via Terry

Bonner County Sheriff Daryl Wheeler’s Open Letter to Governor Brad Little has been wildly misrepresented.

When he penned a short, simple letter to Idaho Governor Brad Little questioning the wisdom and constitutionality of emergency stay-at-home directives concerning the coronavirus epidemic, Bonner County Sheriff Daryl Wheeler was not expecting the media firestorm and the avalanche of over-the-top condemnation that have rained down on him.

The New York Times suggested the sheriff was leading a “rebellion” that “threatens to undermine coronavirus orders,” and quoted area doctors that condemned the sheriff’s call for moderation in response to the virus. One physician, a prominent surgeon, went so far as to call Sheriff Wheeler’s letter appeal “criminal” and stated that Sheriff Wheeler (and Idaho State Representative Heather Scott, who supported the sheriff’s appeal) might be denied medical care as a result. Dr. Robert J. Burnett wrote, in an April 5 letter to the editor in the Bonner County Bee, in the event that either Sheriff Wheeler or Rep. Scott happen to contract COVID-19 and need hospital care and/or a ventilator, “that I, and all of my co-workers take comfort in knowing that, because of your behavior, you have essentially relinquished your claim to any of these potentially scarce resources.”

  1. I agree and give thanks, finally a County Sheriff is speaking out and asking for a reasonable discourse on the travesty we are experiencing. I am writing a letter to Sheriff Wheeler thanking him for his fortitude. As for doctor burnett and his letter, as a retired nurse I am appalled that he wrote it. I would refuse to work under him, I would rather suffer being fired then lift a finger to work with him. What happened to his oath in part, "Do no Harm" same oath I took.

  2. Idaho should revoke Dr. Robert J. Burnett's license ti practice medicine and the AMA should censure him.

  3. Dr Burnett was the dr that did the quadruple bypass on my husband last September. He probably saved my husband’s life. With that being said I will also state that he has the bedside manners of pond scum and carries his short little person around with the air that he is kin to Zeus because he is a surgeon. Being around him gives a person the urge to punt his arse into a large rock formation.
Also note that Sandpoint is a liberal town who continually tries to infringe on 2cnd amendment rights, along with other soft headed liberal policies.

    1. Thanks and don't take your guns to town, sweetie.:) I thought you had checked out the area before you bought, of course times quickly change. Beautiful looking at your place from the air. Any new pictures?

    2. Oh, we don’t live in that county. We live 2 counties south of there but the hospital where Dr, Burnett practices is in Kootenai county, which is also south of Sandpoint. Coeur d’ Alene is the largest town in north Idaho and is where the hospital is. We’re a good 1 1/2 hour drive north to get just to Coeur d’ Alene.

    3. Oh, there will be new pics later this summer, I promise. We have about 20 projects going at once right now. In fact the hubs is down planting steel posts in cement for the new, permanent hog pens right now. He put some in, then decided he would put more in cement, because, well, hogs.๐Ÿ˜Ž

  4. My husband worked in the Sandpoint area 35 years ago and it was liberal then. We just moved to north central Idaho where everyone is armed and our sheriff says he likes it that way. Idaho just passed a law where a license is no longer required to carry concealed. We need to write to uppity Dr Burnett and tell him what's what. I see a lawsuit in his future when his words come back to bite him. Sheriff Wheeler is only too aware of the evil spreading across the world. He has my vote.

    1. Sounds like a good man to me. When did you move there, 2015/16?

    2. November 2019. We finally had enough of the liberal government in Oregon, even though we had a conservative constitutional sheriff where we lived.
